  • "Game of Thrones" became the most-nominated primetime scripted series in Emmys history on Thursday.
  • It already has the most wins of any primetime scripted series, and has a good chance to add to its total this year.
  • It's not the most nominated or awarded show of any kind, though. That title goes to "SNL."

Netflix may have broke HBO's 17-year streak of most Emmys nominations this year, but HBO's prestige show still led the pack with the most nominations for a series - and broke a record in the process.

"Game of Thrones" returned in full force on Thursday when the nominations were announced for September's 70th Emmy Awards. After a hiatus - it wasn't eligible in 2017 - it racked up 22 nominations for its seventh season that aired last summer.

That brings the show's total nominations so far to 128, the most of any primetime scripted series in Emmys history (it had 106 by 2016 when it was last eligible). And this fall, it could add to its record-breaking win total, as well.

The show became the most-awarded primetime scripted series in 2016 with 38 total wins. It beat "Frasier" for this title in its first six seasons, while "Frasier" was on for 11. It's aided by its domination in the creative categories like special effects and costumes, though. This also helped "Game of Thrones" become the most-awarded show in a single year in 2015 with 12 wins.

"Game of Thrones" still isn't the most nominated or awarded show of any kind in Emmys history, though: "Saturday Night Live," a sketch series not in primetime, maintains those records, but has also been on the air for 43 years. "SNL" has over 200 total nominations and brought its total wins to 64 last year.

"Game of Thrones" has a good chance to add to its win total this year, though. Emmys voters are obviously still attracted to the series despite its hiatus, and the show won Outstanding Drama Series in both 2015 and 2016. Its biggest competition this year is most likely "The Handmaid's Tale," which won the Drama award last year and has 20 nominations.

"Game of Thrones" has always maintained a steady amount of nominations, but this year isn't even its most for the show. In 2015, it gained 24 nominations.

The 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by "SNL's" Colin Jost and Michael Che, will air live September 17 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
