Here’s are the top spy dramas and thrillers on Netflix, Amazon and other streaming platforms
Bard of Blood releasing on Sept 27, 2019, on Netflix
Starring: Emraan Hashmi, Shobhita Dhulipala, Kirti Kulhari and Vineet Kumar.
Director: Ribhu Dasgupta.
Based on Bilal Siddiqui's book, this soon-to-be released show tells the story of an expelled spy, Kabir Anand (played by Emraan). He surprisingly chooses to become a professor. But his life will not remain as staid, especially after he is called back to save his former brethren who were captured by the Taliban.
Bard of Blood has its share of cliffhangers, and is perfect for those who seek a rush of adrenalin.
The Family Man on Amazon Prime Video
Stars: Manoj Bajpai, Sharib Hashmi, Priyamani
Director: Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK
Looks like spy thrillers are in this season. Netflix’s rival — Amazon Prime too launched its series starring Manoj Bajpai as Srikant. The spy lives a dual life--one that of a simple and boring father of two and a husband, while running covert missions against terror.
Srikant’s character will be seen grappling with home and terror, and sometimes terror at home. It is left to be seen if Bajpai’s performance will be accepted by the audience. As the show is set in Delhi, it brings home issues like mob-lynching, attacks against those who eat beef and terror threats.
A college student and football star, Massey is the perfect Indian son who helps his parents out by working as a driver at a ride hailing service. All is well until he meets a drunk and disillusioned girl, which ends up in a night of sex and drugs. He wakes up to her brutally stabbed dead body and is almost immediately caught in police and legal net.
Massey gives a stellar performance as a disillusioned youngster, grappling with the reality of his changed life which he finds tough to accept.
Delhi Crime
Cast: Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal
Director: Richie Mehta
Delhi Crime a Netflix original series, and recreation of events that happened before and after the horrific ‘Nirbhaya' gang rape in December 2012. The seven-episode series portrays the intense police investigation followed by trauma and the horrific aftermath of a crime that shook the conscience of the nation.
Even as the show is criticised for praising the police too much, it gives a realistic picture of Indian police and their investigations.
Abhay Pratap Singh, the head of the Special Task Force, who has a knack for solving complicated cases, which are inspired by real-life incidents.
Amongst others, it showcases the horrific Nithari case where businessman and his house help sexually abuse, murder and eat children in the suburbs of Noida. The show is not for the faint hearted, as these crimes affect the protagonist himself who later turns obsessive about his son’s security. The series is all about how he solves crimes, even as he is haunted by the thought of someone murdering his child.
