  • Tyndall Air Force base evacuated most staff and all aircraft on Monday - just before they "took a direct hit" from the category four Hurricane Michael.
  • The Florida base has "extensive damage," a press release said on Wednesday, and they will assess the full scale of the problem when it's safe.
  • The base is home to F22 Raptor jets and is a main US Air Force training base.

Tyndall Air Force Base said it suffered "extensive damage" from Hurricane Michael as they "took a direct hit" from the category four storm which brought 130mph winds.

The base's Facebook page announced the news on Wednesday night and said the full extent of the damage isn't know, but they will "conduct initial damage assessments when it is safe to do so."

This video, shared on streaming platform Periscope, by Bart Comstock, is from the gates of the air base, and shows just how vicious the winds were on Wednesday:

On Monday, another Tyndall AFB press release said all aircraft were evacuated to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Staff members were ordered to evacuate later that day.

Base officials said they don't know when it will be safe to return.

Twitter user "Skye" sent this tweet on Wednesday, with "a few pictures of what our Airman have to come home to."

The base is home to the 325th Fighter Wing of the US Air Force and is a main training hub for F-22, F-15, and F-35A jets.

It's primary objective is to train and project unrivaled combat air power for F-22 Raptor pilots, their website said

Nearby resident Christine Lynch shared this photo of a toppled F-15 display jet at the base on Wednesday:

Here's the full message from Tyndall AFB posted on Facebook:

No injuries have been reported at the base as of Thursday morning.
