The blaze broke out at about 6:15 a.m. on 225th Street in the neighborhood of Wakefield and escalated to a fifth alarm by 7:30 a.m.
Heavy smoke was seen for miles, and a user on Twitter said she can smell it from the other side of the borough.
Fire officials said the building — a detached garage behind an apartment building — is partially collapsed, and they don't know what was inside.
ABC has more pictures of firefighters dealing with the flames.
No word yet on the cause of the fire.
More to come as information becomes available.
