Here are the best new features coming to Tesla cars
Tesla's user interface gets a major facelift.
The media player, for example, has been redesigned to put your favorite content at the center of the screen to give the user easier access.
Maps and navigation functions will also look different. Maps will now take up the entire screen and will highlight the most important details of the trip.
The control bar will fade automatically so you can get a clear view of the map. The zoom will also adjust itself so that the map shows only the area related to your navigation.
Voice controls received some improvements and can now be activated with a single tap. A transcript of your command will also appear on the instrument panel so you don't have to take your hands off the wheel.
Another new feature is the cabin overheat protection function.
The feature lets Tesla owners set a max temperature for inside the vehicle so that kids and pets never get overheated, even when the car is off.
Autopilot, which is Tesla's semi-autonomous driving system, got some big improvements with the 8.0 update.
The improved Autopilot enables the car to better find curves in the road and adjust the speed accordingly.
The improved Autopilot also enables Tesla vehicles to automatically exit off-ramps when the indicator is on.
One of the biggest changes with 8.0 is that Autopilot is now using radar as a primary control sensor. This helps the car more accurately detect obstacles.
Because Autopilot is making better use of radar, Tesla cars can look beyond the car located directly in front of it. It does this by bouncing the radar off the road to see what's up ahead. So in theory, a Tesla vehicle with Autopilot could see an accident up ahead before the car it's following can.
The updated Autopilot will also detect if a car from another lane is entering your lane and will automatically offset the Tesla in the lane.
With the latest update, Autopilot will also have a new safety feature to ensure the driver is paying attention. If the driver ignores repeated warnings to keep his or her hands on the wheel, the driver will be required to pull over and park the car in order to activate Autopilot again.
