Facebook is killing Notify, its app that sent breaking news notifications
Facebook has pulled the plug on its Notify app after launching it in the App Store just 7 months ago.
In a statement to The Verge, a Facebook spokesperson said that the technology powering Notify will be made available in Messenger so that publishers can "reach even more people interested in real-time updates."
Notify users have already begun to get notifications from Facebook that the app is shutting down. "We're transitioning parts of Notify into other Facebook products," it reads.
Notify let you subscribe to media outlets like CNN, Vogue, and The Weather Channel to get push notifications for breaking news. You could then choose to dismiss or save the stories for reading later in the Notify app.
Notify never caught on in the App Store - it was ranked at number 286 in the store's news section as of June 1, according to app tracking firm App Annie.
It sounds like the notification tech that powered Notify will aid chat bots in Messenger, which so far haven't been well received.
