Facebook breaks up with another Microsoft program

Facebook has officially killed off Facebook Connect, the tool that links your Microsoft account with your Facebook account.

Facebook Connect, first introduced in 2010, allowed Outlook.com users to see contact information from their Facebook friends directly within their emails. For Windows Phone users, Facebook Connect also automatically filled in contact information in the People app.

The tool also worked behind to scenes to let you share content from Microsoft's OneDrive.com to your Facebook friends.

But no longer.

"Facebook has made an update to their Graph API that will impact Microsoft apps and services," says an official Microsoft blog post on the subject. In other words, Facebook has changed the way that its behind-the-scenes plumbing works, and that stuff won't work anymore.

Once upon a time, Microsoft and Facebook were bosom buddies - Microsoft even made an early investment in Facebook, circa 2007. But as Facebook's ambitions grow and grow, it's being forced to burn a few bridges with once-partners like Microsoft, the best example being Facebook's unceremonious dumping of Microsoft Skype.

Facebook did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
