Prices for carrying excess baggage in aircrafts slashed to one-third

If you believe in taking your world along whenever you travel, a habit that costs you a lot in terms of price for carrying excess baggage, this is good news for you! As per a revised fee structure, fliers will now need to shell out one-third price for excess checked-in baggage from today onwards.

As per the new rules, only Rs 100 would be charged per additional kilo of checked-in baggage up to a certain level, as compared to the prior charge of Rs 300 per kg.

The reduced rates were to come into effect from 15th June, but airlines demanded some time to upgrade their systems, leading to aviation regulator DGCA delaying the rule.

All private domestic airlines allow free checked-in baggage up to 15 kg after which the flier has to pay the said charges. Only Air India allows a free baggage of up to 23 kg.

However, this really doesn’t mean that you will take everything you want to, since carriers are free to charge any fee on the baggage weighing beyond 20 kg.
