Why critics are in love with 'Doctor Strange,' Marvel's 'most exciting spectacle'

The smart aleck who's knocked down and becomes humbled while dusting himself off has been done before by Marvel with "Iron Man." But Marvel has the formula down so well for cinematic origin stories that though the plot of "Doctor Strange" is nothing new, it gets the job done.

"True, 'Doctor Strange' is an origin story, and occasionally hemmed in by the genre’s narrative requirements," The Wrap wrote, "but it’s smart enough to bring in great British actors to make the predictable paces and life lessons feel fresh and fascinating."

"'Doctor Strange' is basically a reboot of 'Iron Man,' only with a lot more prettier things to look at while you’re stoned. It’s a good strategy. And it works," Uproxx wrote.

Cumberbatch brings his skilled dramatic chops to the scenes that need it and has the clever wit for those moments of lighthearted fun. Basically, he was born to play Strange.

"Cumberbatch is riveting throughout the picture and makes you believe in Strange’s transformation from entitled douchebag to fearless hero even when the script itself can’t really justify it," The Playlist wrote.

"The character is literally fighting for his life in this film, and Cumberbatch captures both his humbling and the subsequent recovery of confidence," Variety said.

It can be a bummer when you go to a Marvel movie, stick through the credits, and the scene at the end is a dud. For someone who has already seen the movie, I assure you, this is not the case with "Doctor Strange."
