Nick Valentine

Find him at: Vault 114 at the Park Street Station.

Unique Perk: "Close to Metal." +50% faster terminal hacking and one additional guess.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity and completing "Long Time Coming" sidequest.

-Do: Give items, hack terminals, pick non-owned locks, heal Dogmeat, side against the synths that hate Scientists in The Covenant quest, be nice.
-Don't: Eat corpses, murder non-hostiles, use violent language, join the Brotherhood of Steel, kill robots and synths, pick owned locks, pickpocket, steal.

Nick Valentine is a fedora-wearing trench-coat-donning tough-as-nails '50s detective Synth who's seen it all and doesn't let any wise-guys get the better of him. He can hack terminals that might be out of your experience level, and is a great decoy to distract enemies. He offers some decent short-range help during combat with his revolver.

Piper

Find her in: Diamond City

Unique Perk: "Gift of Gab." Gain double XP for overcoming dialogue challenges and discovering new locations.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity.

-Do: Give items, heal Dogmeat, pick non-owned locks, use sarcasm (sometimes), join the Minutemen, join the Railroad, help innocent civilians, join Minutemen, avoid violence in dialogue, give Vault-Tec rep a new home.
-Don't: Eat corpses, murder non-hostiles, give chems to Mama Murphy, pick owned locks, pickpocket, steal, the Brotherhood of Steel, intimidate others, lie, be greedy, bribe, gain entry into The Covenant.

Piper runs a newspaper in Diamond District called "Publick Occurrences." Her custom pistol can offer some decent help in short-range combat situations.

Hancock

Find him at: Scollay Square in Town of Goodneighbor.

Unique Perk: "Isodoped." Criticals recharge 20% faster when you're at 250 Rads or higher.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity.

-Do: Get addicted to chems, give items, give chems, ask what other characters need.
-Don't: Murder non-hostiles, run around naked, be greedy, steal.

Hancock is a ghoul, who's also the self-appointed mayor of Goodneighbor. Despite the massive amounts of radiation he's absorbed, he's one of the few relatively stable ghouls around the Commonwealth.

Dogmeat

Dogmeat

Find him at: Red Rocket Truck Shop

Unique Perk: "Attack Dog." Can bite and hold on to enemies for greater damage.

Gained by reaching level 4. Perk level is increased when you reach levels 9 and 25.

Dogmeat doesn't discriminate based on your decisions and actions. You can run around wild and naked while juicing yourself up with Chems and getting addicted to them, killing non-hostiles and eating their corpses while stealing items that aren't yours, and Dogmeat will still love you for you are. He is truly a post-apocalypse survivor's best friend.

Dogmeat is a stray German Shepherd you find at the Red Rocket Truckstop that helps protect you during quests. He's adorable, obviously.

Preston Garvey

Find him at: The Museum of Freedom in Concord.

Unique Perk: "United We Stand." Gain +20 damage and +20 damage resistance when facing three or more enemies.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity.

-Do: Give items, modify weapons.
-Don't: Get addicted to chems, eat corpses, murder non-hostiles, pick owned locks, pickpocket, use the Fat Man, attack other Minutemen, be greedy, join or help the Brotherhood of Steel, or steal.

Garvey is a member of the Commonwealth Minutemen and leads a group of survivors. His powerful laser musket makes him a good option for long-range combat, but not so much for short-range.

Strong

Find him at: The cage at the top of Trinity Tower after completing the "Curtain Call" side quest.

Unique Perk: "Berserk." You get 20+ damage with melee weapon attacks.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity

-Do: Eat corpse and murder non-hostiles, steal, use charismatic speech successfully.
-Don't: Heal Dogmeat, pick owned or non-owned locks, use power armor, use Vertibird, hack terminals, join or help the Brotherhood of Steel.

Strong is a Shakespeare-loving Super Mutant. He can be of huge help in all combat with his giant hammer.

Paladin Danse

Find him at: The Cambridge Police Station.

Unique Perk: "Know Your Enemy." You inflict +20 more damage on Super Mutants, Synths, and Feral Ghouls.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity

-Do: Modify armor, modify weapons, use power armor, use Vertibird, help settlers for Minutemen, anything negative against Super Mutants, talk highly of the Brotherhood of Steel in dialogue.
-Don't: Get addicted to chems, murder non-hostiles, pick owned locks, pickpocket, steal, be nice to Super Mutants, be nice to ghouls, be neutral or positive about synths.

Paladin Danse wears power armor that never runs out. He'll shout "Outstanding" when he approves of something you do.

Deacon

Deacon

Find him at: The Old North Church after completing the "Tradecraft" side quest. Spell "railroad" on the crest with letters on the wall in the basement.

Unique Perk: "Cloak & Dagger." You gain +40 to stealth duration and your sneak attacks inflict +20 more damage.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity

-Do: Give items, help people, hack terminals, heal Dogmeat, pick owned and non-owned locks, resolve conflict without killing, help synths, and use charismatic speech successfully.
-Don't: Get addicted to chems, use chems, be greedy, eat corpses.

Deacon is a spy from The Railroad who was sent to spy on you. He's a master of disguise and will randomly change disguises while following you. He'll say he's a synth, but he's not really.

Curie

Find her at: In Vault 81 after completing the "Hole in the Wall" sidequest. Make sure to tell her you're Vault-Tec Security when you talk to her.

Unique Perk: "Combat Medic." Curie will heal you by 100 Hit Points when your health goes below 10. She's limited to one healing per day in the game.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity and completing "Emergent Behavior" side quest.

-Do: Give items, support other characters, prevent violence in dialogue, complete Cambridge polymer labs experience. And heal Dogmeat, of course.
-Don't: Use chems, murder non-hostiles, pickpocket, use violence, kill a Mister Gutsy or Mister Handy unit, be greedy, enter the town of the Covenant, or steal.

Curie starts off as robot similar to Codsworth, but she can evolve into a synth body.

Cait

Find her at: The Combat Zone in Boston.

Unique Perk: "Trigger Rush." Your Action Points (AP) regenerate faster if your Health is below 25%.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity and completing "Benign Intervention" sidequest.

-Do: Use chems (in quest), become addicted to chems (in quest), consume alcohol, give items (in quest), run around naked (if male), pick owned and unowned locks, pickpocket, threaten in dialogue, be greedy, help the Brotherhood of Steel, stop the Institute.
-Don't: Use chems (out of quest), become addicted to chems (out of quest), give items (out of quest), eat corpses, use speech to avoid a fight, flirt with other characters that are in a romance with her, help the Railroad.

Cait is an Irish pit fighter. She's addicted to Chems, but she can pick locks up to the Master level.

MacCready

MacCready

Find him at: The Third Rail basement. Available for hire for 250 bottle caps.

Unique Perk: "Killshot." Your headshot accuracy in V.A.T.S. is increased by 20 percent.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity and completing "Long Road Ahead" side quest.

-Do: Help children or their parents, mercenary behavior/accepting money for quests, sarcasm, join the Minutemen, pick owned locks, use charisma in dialogue successfully, steal.
-Don't: Use chems, give items, murder non-hostiles.

MacReady is a top marksman/mercenary/town leader, and is great for helping out in long-range combat. You can negotiate his "fee" down to 200 caps.

Unique Perk: "Shield Harmonics." You receive a +20 Energy Resistance.

Gained by achieving maximum Affinity.

-Do: Hack terminals, modify armor, modify weapons, use charisma in dialogue successfully, use power armor, assist scientists at The Institute, be greedy.
-Don't: Use chems, get addicted to chems, give items, heal Dogmeat, run around naked, use Vertibirds.

X6-88 is an advanced synth soldier and is great for all types of combat.
