Much before
saas-bahu sagas became a never-ending
torture on Indian television, this was the first show that dealt with the
relationship of a mischievous duo of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in the
most humorous manner possible. The show starred Reema Lagoo, Supriya
Pilgaonkar, Mahesh Thakur and Kuldeep Pawar and was produced by Nirja Guleri.
Ramayan
Ramayan was the first mythological serial to be shown
on such a large level. The success of this show can be estimated by the fact
that the star cast was considered to be Gods. The show was written and directed
by Ramanand Sagar and had a huge ensemble cast. Ramayan was aired on Doordarshan on a weekly basis.
Hudd Kar Di
After donning their mythological
characters, Dara Singh and Swapnil Joshi came together for this serial, revolving around an upper middle class Wadhwa family in Mumbai. The Zee TV serial was produced
by Sushriya Arts and also had Mahesh Thakur, Rita Bhaduri, Shilpa Tulaskar and
Sumeet Raghavan in lead roles. It was a family sitcom, and was liked by kids
and adults alike.
Saans
If your mothers still remembers Neena Gupta, it is most probably because of the show called Saans, which was aired on Star plus. The series starred Neena Gupta, Kanwaljit Singh, Kavita Kapoor and was written and directed by Neena Gupta herself. It was one of the pioneer soap operas of India.
Kora Kaagaz
Another
show that dealt with the turbulence of Indian women, this show was made by
yesteryear actress Asha Parekh, who made Renuka Shahane a well-known name in
the country. The show also starred Salil Ankola, Amit Behl, Smita Bansal and
Anil Dhawan.
Hip Hip Hurray
The super
hit teen show produced by UTV Group was a turning point in the graph of Zee TV.
Not only do we remember the title track like at the back of our hand, we also
remember the names of all the characters and actors. It was based on the lives
of a group of class 12th at the fictional DeNobili High School in Mumbai, and
showed the adventures and turbulences of these teenagers. This is the show that inspired a whole
generation of Indian kids to have fun in their senior schools and colleges. The
actors from this show, who were struggling at that time, went on to make a name
for themselves in the television industry. Some of the names are Purab Kohli,
Vishal Malhotra, Rushad Rana, Peeya Rai Chowdhary, Samantha Tremayne, Sharokh
Bharucha, Zafar Karachiwalla, and Mehul Nisar.
Aahat
If there is
one show that can still make a chill run down our spines, it’s this horror show
called Aahat. It was produced by
Fireworks Productions and was telecast on Sony. The show is still remembered
for its special effects and eerie music.
Dekh Bhai Dekh
This was one of the earliest family shows in India with a humorous punch to it. The show was about an upper-middle- class family from Mumbai and their daily lives and relationships. The show starred Sushma Seth, NK Shivpuri, Navin Nischol, Farida Jalal, Shekhar Suman, Bhawana Balsaver, Vishal Singh, Nattasha Singh, Sunny Singh and Karishma Acharya. Actors like Amar Upadhyaya and Urvashi Dholakia made special appearances on the show which was produced by Jaya Bachchan under Saraswati Audio Visuals Pvt Ltd, and was aired on Doordarshan.
