The final episodes of "The Crown" have landed on Netflix, turning the last page in the streamer's story about the life of the late monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
But with the events of the last episode taking place in 2005, it's understandable that some viewers may be wondering if there's more story to tell.
After all, the Queen ruled for another 17 years before she died in 2022 at the age of 96.
There's been plenty of drama inside the walls of Windsor since 2005 that would make for entertaining and enthralling television, including the "Megxit" saga and accusations of sexual assault against Prince Andrew.
So will the story be continued in some way? Here's what you need to know.
Is there going to be a season 7 of 'The Crown?'
In 2020 "The Crown" creator Peter Morgan, announced season six would be the series' last, having originally planned for the show to run for five seasons.
In a statement shared by Netflix, he said: "Now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop."
"To be clear, season 6 will not bring us any closer to present day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail," he added.
As for his decision not to dramatize more recent royal events, Morgan has previously discussed his "20-year rule."
Speaking to Variety, he said: "I think by stopping almost 20 years before the present day, it's dignified," adding that wrapping up things in 2005 allows him to "keep it historical, not journalistic."
A prequel to 'The Crown' featuring past monarchs has been discussed
Speaking to Variety earlier this year, Morgan said that he has considered continuing "The Crown" franchise with a prequel series.
"I do have an idea," he told the publication. "But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together."
He added: "If I were to go back into 'The Crown,' it would definitely be to go back in time."
Netflix boss Ted Sarandos was also quoted in the article, stating that he had "absolute faith" in Morgan. "If he believes there are stories to be told there, we definitely would explore it," he said.
In 2022, Deadline reported that Netflix was in early-stage conversations with "The Crown" production company, Left Bank Pictures, about a prequel series to the smash hit royal drama.
The outlet noted at the time that the potential prequel would focus on events some 50 years before "The Crown," and cover the pre-World War II era, or late Victorian era when Queen Victoria reigned.
Representatives for Netflix and Left Bank did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.
