The "Loki" TV series has slowly transformed Tom Hiddleston's titular God of Mischief into something far more powerful than ever before over the course of two seasons.

While Loki started out as a theatrical villain in 2011's "Thor," he's now become one of the most important characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Loki" season two picks up immediately after the end of the first season, with Loki trying to protect the multiverse from He Who Remains/Kang (Jonathan Majors) as the Time Variance Authority descends into chaos and the MCU's Sacred Timeline starts to disintegrate.

After several attempts to stabilize the fabric of reality in the finale, Loki unlocks new abilities as a result of his time-traveling adventures that allow him to personally hold the timelines together.

In doing so, Loki has effectively taken He Who Remains' place at the end of time. This could mean that he'll be out of the picture for a while. After all, keeping the timelines stable is a full-time job (with zero benefits).

So does that mean "Loki" season three isn't happening?

The lead writer of 'Loki' says there aren't any active plans for season 3

Speaking to CinemaBlend, "Loki" lead writer Eric Martin said that there aren't any plans for "Loki" season three at the moment.

Martin also noted that he and the show's other writers scripted "Loki" with just two seasons in mind.

"We approached this as like two halves of a book. Season one, first half. Season two, we close the book on Loki and the TVA," he said. "Where it goes beyond that, I don't know. I just wanted to tell a full and complete story across those two seasons."

That's not to say that the story couldn't continue, however.

In October, "Loki" executive producer Kevin Wright told Deadline that there have been conversations about where to go next.

"We take it season by season, and there are certainly things that Tom and I and other casts have talked about of where we see this going, and I know there's some excitement for that internally," he said.

"But just from a storytelling standpoint, I think we always conceived of seasons one and two as a whole," Wright added. "That these are two chapters of the same book, and that season two is finishing that book, and there are other stories to be told there, but I think they would be new books, if that's not too coy."

Tom Hiddleston says 'Loki' season two is the 'conclusion' to his time in the MCU

Appearing on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Friday, the actor described it as the culmination of his time in the MCU.

"It's the conclusion of season two. It's also the conclusion to seasons one and two. It's also the conclusion to six films, 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life. I was 29 when I was cast, I'm 42 now. It's been a journey," he said.

However, it's important to remember that the MCU is hurtling toward more multiversal adventures in 2026's "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and 2027's "Avengers: Secret Wars." With Loki now in charge of different timelines, he could very easily play a powerful role in future movies.

But for now, it looks like the chances of "Loki" season three are slim.
