"Saturday Night Live" is having a moment. Its landmark 50th season premiered on NBC on September 28, and the film "Saturday Night," a real-time comedy thrill ride of the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of "SNL," is in theaters now.
The sketch show is now known for jumpstarting the successful careers of dozens of comedy icons — former cast member Adam Sandler was Hollywood's highest-paid actor in 2023, earning $73 million, Forbes reported — but when it premiered in 1975, it was a completely unknown quantity.
