What we can expect from the upcoming 'Teen Wolf' movie, so far
- A "Teen Wolf" movie is in the works, with Tyler Posey reprising his role as Scott McCall.
- Other cast members from the hit MTV series will return, including Holland Roden and Crystal Reed.
A film sequel to MTV's "Teen Wolf" is set to be released in early 2023, years after the hit supernatural show came to an end.
"Teen Wolf: The Movie" was announced on September 24, 2021, on the anniversary of the "Teen Wolf" series finale. It'll be written and executive produced by Jeff Davis, who created the original series. Davis is also working on a new show titled "Wolf Pack," based on the book series by Edo Van Belkom.
Here's what fans can expect from the upcoming "Teen Wolf" film.
Tyler Posey is reprising his role as Scott McCall and other original cast members will return
"I'm just excited to play this character again," Posey told Entertainment Weekly. "I miss him, I love him."
"What I'm most excited for is to see them age," he added. "We were in high school for what seemed like 10 years."
"High school was such a character in itself on the show, so I'm excited to see how it's going to be without that sort of character of a school involved," Posey said. "It will be interesting."
In September 2021, talks were underway with the original cast.
That month, Linden Ashby (Sheriff Noah Stilinski) told a fan on Twitter that they can expect more scenes between his character and Stiles Stilinski, played by Dylan O'Brien.
Joining Posey for the film are Ashby, Tyler Hoechlin (Derek Hale), Holland Roden (Lydia Martin), Shelley Hennig (Malia Tate), Crystal Reed (Allison Argent), Orny Adams (coach Bobby Finstock), JR Bourne (Chris Argent), Seth Gilliam (Dr. Alan Deaton), Colton Haynes (Jackson Whittemore), Ryan Kelley (Deputy Jordan Parrish), Melissa Ponzio (Melissa McCall), Dylan Sprayberry (Liam Dunbar), and Khylin Rhambo (Mason Hewitt).
Most notably absent from the lineup are O'Brien and Arden Cho (Kira Yukimura).
O'Brien has repeatedly stated in interviews that he won't be part of the film.
"Ultimately, I just decided it was left in a really good place for me and I still want to leave it there," he told Variety in March 2022. "I wish them well and I'm going to watch it the first night it comes out. I hope it fucking kicks ass, but I'm not going to be in it."
According to Deadline, Cho declined to reprise her role as Kira because she "was offered half the per-episode salary proposed to her three counterparts."
'Teen Wolf: The Movie' will feature new faces
Amy Workman will play a character named Hikari and Vince Mattis will play Derek's son named Eli.
At the film's panel at New York Comic-Con in October 2022, attended by Insider, Sprayberry confirmed that Hikari will be Liam's love interest.
At the panel for "Teen Wolf: the Movie" at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, which Insider attended, Davis said that there was "an exhaustive search" to find the right actor to play Derek's child.
Hoechlin, a producer for the movie, was hands-on with the casting and participated in auditions with the young actors in the running.
Hoechlin said that when he saw Mattis' audition tape, he "felt like he was the guy."
"Vince was just such a great kid," he said. "He did such a great job on the film, I'm so proud of him and we were lucky to have him."
The movie is set 15 years later, with Scott in his 30s
"My character is now older than I am," Posey said at SDCC. "I've never been the same age as Scott."
"When we first started he was 15, I was 18, now he's like 55 and I'm 30," he joked.
On a serious note, Posey said that "Teen Wolf: The Movie" will show a new, more mature side of Scott.
"Beacon Hills kind of messed Scott up and I think along with everybody here, Beacon Hills was a fucking wild ride," he said. "So Scott wanted to step away. He lives in Los Angeles now. He wanted to get away from Beacon Hills. He wanted to put the leadership role on the shelf for a little while.
The actor said that when fans see Scott in the movie, "he's kind of a normal person."
"He still works at the vet," Posey said. "And he is lonely. He's an adult. He's going through what all of us have gone through as adults. He's dealt with some really serious moments in his life, with Beacon Hills. But stepping away, he deals with the reality of what it is to be an actual human. And instead of a superhero werewolf saving the world constantly, he now has to figure out how to save himself."
"He's a little more relaxed," Posey added. "He's not so focused on saving the world yet."
The actor elaborated more on his character's journey during his appearance at NYCC, saying that "emotionally, physically, he was constantly on edge trying to save the world, trying to be the true alpha."
"That's all Scott knew because he's a true alpha and became a true alpha because he is innately a hero and putting down that role, he's lost himself a little bit," Posey said.
Of Scott's loneliness, the actor said: "He's missing the hero role, he's missing friends, he's missing Beacon Hills, he's missing family. We see Scott as a sort of troubled adult, depressed, kind of dealing with loneliness for the first time. And it's really special and powerful and impactful."
Scott and his friends will band together to fight a formidable foe
The logline for the movie reads: "A full moon rises in Beacon Hills, and with it a terrifying evil has emerged. The wolves are howling once again, calling for the return of banshees, werecoyotes, hellhounds, kitsunes, and every other shape-shifter in the night. But only a werewolf like Scott McCall, no longer a teenager yet still an alpha, can gather both new allies and reunite trusted friends to fight back against what could be the most powerful and deadliest enemy they've ever faced."
Reed will be playing a new version of Allison
"It's been 10 years since the pilot so I didn't know how to approach her, and also, I can't give anything away but she's a version of herself [that] we had to create that as well," Reed told Entertainment Weekly in October 2022.
She continued: "I did use a lot of music, and I was looking into a bunch of things that happen to people's psyches. And then I watched the show again from start to finish which was really hard for me to watch because it made me sad. But I fell back in love with her which was nice."
At NYCC, Reed said that all her "Teen Wolf" memories came back to her while on the set of the film. She also teased that the movie will include flashbacks.
"And it was really clear to me how much I had grown as a person and how I was able to put that into Allison's journey," she explained. "But when I look back at the pilot phase and I think about who we were then, our essence of who we are is still the same. And that is so genuinely beautiful."
'Teen Wolf: The Movie' will be released on Paramount+ on January 26, 2023
The initial trailer was released at SDCC in July 2022, giving fans the first official look at Reed's return as Allison.
The first clip from "Teen Wolf: The Movie," showing Derek, Eli, and Allison in a scene, was unveiled at NYCC.
