What India watched on Netflix in 2022

OTT platform Netflix recently released its year-end blog for 2022, summarising the shows, movies, and genres that kept Indians entertained this year.

Originals, sequels and going global

In 2022, fan favourites like Delhi Crime returned for season 2 while originals like Khakee: The Bihar Chapter kept the audience hooked. Pan-India star Dhanush went international with Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man.

Netflix originals in India in 2022

27 Netflix films and series were launched in India in 2022, across 5 formats and over 10 genres. 7 out of 9 films released this year featured in Netflix’s global Top 10 for non-English films and 6 out of 7 returning seasons of Netflix series featured in the #1 spot in TV shows in India.

The ‘Darlings’ of the year

The Netflix film Alia Bhatt-Shefali Shah-starrer Darlings enjoyed the highest opening ever for any Netflix film in India. It was watched in 28 countries with total viewing hours of over 32 million. Rajkummar Rao’s Monica, O My Darling, meanwhile, trended in the #1 spot in 7 countries, including India, in the first two weeks of its release.

Other Netflix hits in 2022

Mismatched S2, Jamtara Sabka Number Ayega S2, and Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein were the most trending Indian series this year. On average, every Netflix film and series from India released in 2022 trended in 8 countries.

The blockbusters on Netflix

RRR (Hindi) (viewed for over 73 million hours), Gangubai Kathiawadi (viewed for over 50 million hours), and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (viewed for over 21 million hours) were lapped up by audiences around the world. At 15 weeks, RRR (Hindi) was the longest-ever trending Indian film on Netflix’s global Top 10 for non-English films.

Everyone loves 'Alia'

2 of the 3 blockbusters that trended on Netflix featured actor Alia Bhatt in a leading role - Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR. The third, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, starred Kiara Advani - who, as fans would know, was named Alia at birth!

Netflix and thrill

For both Indian and global stories, thriller was one of the top-watched genres on Netflix in India in 2022. Other popular genres were action dramas and sports dramas.

The international hits

As per Netflix, five of its biggest English-language series of all time premiered this year and trended in India - Inventing Anna and Bridgerton S2, followed by Stranger Things S4, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and Wednesday.

Most-watched non-Indian languages

Korean and Spanish were the most watched non-Indian languages on Netflix after English. In fact, Money Heist (Spanish), Squid Game (Korean), and All Of Us Are Dead (Korean) were among the most trending global titles in India.
