  • Warner Bros. Discovery is close to a deal for a new Harry Potter TV series, per Bloomberg.
  • The series could see a season produced for each of the seven books written by JK Rowling.

Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly in talks to produce a new online Harry Potter TV series, based on the best-selling books by JK Rowling, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

The deal would see a season produced for each of Rowling's seven books, two people with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg.

The people, who asked not to be identified because the deal is yet to be announced, said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys have been attempting to convince Rowling to join the project as a producer, but the deal is still in the works.

Rowling, who has recently received backlash for making transphobic remarks, will be involved to ensure the series respects the source material, but her influence would end there as she will not be running the show on a day-to-day basis, according to Bloomberg.

Once Rowling joins the project, the company will start looking for a writer, according to the entertainment news site Deadline.

Warner Bros. Discovery has not immediately responded to Insider's request for comment.

The first book in the Harry Potter series was published in 1998 in the US and follows the story of a young wizard whose parents are murdered by an evil sorcerer, and is sent to live with his non-magical relatives. The boy grows up to find out he's a wizard and attends a leading magical school called Hogwarts.

25 years later, the books have become the best-selling series of all time and over 600 million copies have been sold worldwide, according to Scholastic.

It's also resulted in eight box office movies with ticket sales of over $7.7 billion, according to data from Box Office Mojo, cited by Bloomberg. Meanwhile, the overall Harry Potter franchise which includes books, toys, and games has earned $15 billion, Insider reported in 2021.

A new Harry Potter-themed video game Hogwarts Legacy, produced by Warner Bros. Discovery, raked in $850 million in sales within two weeks of its launch in February.
