The Grammys host Trevor Noah used his opening monologue to mock the tension surrounding the British royal family following the drama around Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

As Noah opened the 2021 Grammys, he noted that the ceremony would be unlike any other because of the coronavirus-related restrictions in place.

"This year's Grammys is going to look a little different, I'm not going to front, the whole thing is going to be pretty different," Noah said.

"But it's going to be even more exciting because our nominees will be sitting at those tables for their awards, so right now there's more tension in that tent than at a family reunion at Buckingham Palace," Noah said.

The gag came at the expense of the royal family, which has had a dramatic week since the couple's Winfrey interview aired March 7.

During the interview, the couple revealed several revelations. Markle said she had suicidal thoughts after joining the royal family, while the couple said at least one family member had "concerns and conversations" regarding the color of their first child's skin.

Reaction to the interview has continued to pour in from both sides of the pond. Piers Morgan was the center of the drama in the UK, quitting "Good Morning Britain" apparently after he refused to apologize for his on-air diatribes against Markle.

But the royal family wasn't the only UK-specific target in Noah's monologue. The comedian also mentioned the country's prime minister, Boris Johnson.

Noah was speaking about Harry Styles, who performed "Watermelon Sugar" at the ceremony and won a Grammy, his first, for the song.

"It's crazy to think that someone that talented and handsome is from the same place as Boris Johnson," Noah said.

Noah's Grammys was touted as a success, and the evening saw some record-breaking wins. Taylor Swift became the first woman to win the album-of-the-year Grammy for a third time, and Beyoncé's four wins Sunday made her the woman with the most all-time Grammy wins. With 28, she tied Quincy Jones for the most Grammys of any living person.
