The most iconic looks Queen Margrethe of Denmark wore during her reign

Denmark's Queen Margrethe abdicated on Sunday after 52 years on the throne.

The former monarch, 83, announced her intention to pass the throne to her eldest son, King Frederik X, during her annual New Year's Eve speech.

Although she didn't reveal a specific reason behind her decision, she said she underwent back surgery in February, prompting her to consider the future of the Danish monarchy.

Margrethe was crowned in 1972 at the age of 31 following the death of her father, King Frederik IX.

The royal is known for her daring fashion sense, having recently been praised for her eccentric and unique wardrobe by The Telegraph's senior fashion editor Caroline Leaper.

This won't be surprising to those who are aware of her work as an artist and costume designer. Margrethe has been an accomplished artist since the 1970s; she drew the illustrations for a reissued edition of "The Lord of the Rings" in 1977, according to the Danish royal website. More recently, Margrethe designed the set and costumes for the Danish film, "Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction," in August 2023, Town & Country reported at the time.

Here are the most iconic outfits worn by Margrethe during her reign.
