The controversial photo of Kate Middleton and her children was processed on Adobe Photoshop twice, ABC News reported on Thursday.

The photo, which was first released on Sunday by Kensington Palace, was put through the graphics editor on March 8 and 9, ABC News reported, citing the metadata of the photo, which it obtained.

The photo was taken on a Canon 5D Mark IV camera using a 50mm Canon lens, per the outlet.

"Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing," Kate said in a statement on Monday, after several photo agencies issued kill orders for the photo over concerns that it was doctored.

"I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused," the statement continued.

Kate's prolonged absence from the public eye has set the internet abuzz with speculation over her whereabouts. The Princess of Wales was last seen publicly in December before the palace announced on January 17 that she had undergone a "planned abdominal surgery."

The photo's removal, Kate's apology, and her absence from the public eye have spawned conspiracy theories about her health and marriage with Prince William. People have even coined terms like "Katespiracy" and "KateGate" as catchall names for all the wild theories that have been simmering online.

The palace has continued to remain tight-lipped on the princess' affairs. On February 29, the palace said in a terse statement to the media that they would not be giving regular updates on Kate's recovery.

"As we have been clear since our initial statement in January, we shall not be providing a running commentary or providing daily updates," the statement said.

Kensington Palace didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
