'The Kardashians' showrunner says her heart was 'utterly breaking' for Khloé when they filmed Tristan Thompson's paternity scandal fallout
- "The Kardashians" showrunner Danielle King called Tristan Thompson's paternity scandal "heartbreaking."
- In January, Thompson apologized to Khloé Kardashian, saying he had fathered a child with Maralee Nichols.
"The Kardashians" showrunner Danielle King said that it was "truly heartbreaking" to film the family's reactions to Tristan Thompson's paternity scandal.
The show, which releases weekly on Hulu, is a documentary-style view into the Kardashian-Jenner family's lives, in some cases providing context to news that was in the headlines months previous. While the show hasn't yet caught up with Thompson's December and January paternity scandal, it will eventually touch on the events in later episodes.
As part of a larger Q&A about the reality series, King told Insider that it was an emotional moment to film.
"I've fallen in love with the cast and I deeply care about them, so that scene felt very heartbreaking to me," King said, referencing the moment that the news about Thompson broke. "It was truly heartbreaking."
"I'm filming it, but there's still a human aspect to all of it," she continued. "My heart was just utterly breaking for Khloé."
In December, Thompson admitted to cheating on Kardashian with fitness instructor Maralee Nichols after Nichols sued him for child support. At the time, he denied that he was the father of Nichols' child. Later, he issued a public apology to Kardashian in January, saying in an Instagram story that a paternity test revealed that he had fathered Nichols' child.
King told Insider that the crew was coincidentally at Kim Kardashian's house filming something completely different when Kim saw the headlines about Thompson. King said that frequently, events that end up "in all the headlines" occurred while they were shooting something unrelated for the show.
After learning the news about Tristan, Kim then called her sister to tell her the news, the sisters told USA Today in April. Khloé Kardashian told the outlet that it was a "hard" moment, even if she feels "immune to the filming."
On episode four of "The Kardashians," Kardashian said that she and Thompson, who share and co-parent their daughter True, had gotten back together and were in a "really good place." As the episode aired, Kardashian joked on Twitter that "we know how this aged."
In an April ABC News special, Kardashian said that while Thompson was a "great guy" and a "great dad," he was "just not the guy for me."
