Business Insider rounded up the highest-grossing movies of the year, according to BoxOfficeMojo.
Three superhero movies and five sequels were among the biggest moneymakers of 2023.
Many of 2023's biggest movies at the box office were the usual suspects — Marvel movies and big-budget sequels.
However, there were a few surprises, including "Barbie," a video game adaptation, and a Pixar film that was originally written off as a box-office flop.
Keep reading to see which movies came out on top at the box office this year and why expectations for some of these grosses were higher.
All box-office numbers and Rotten Tomatoes scores on this list are current as of December 19, 2023, and are subject to change.
