Taylor Swift directed crew members to hand out water at Eras Tour concert in Brazil after fans chanted in the sweltering heat
- Taylor Swift briefly paused her show on Friday in Brazil to ask crew members to pass out water.
- Before her set, a fan collapsed and later died of cardiac arrest.
During her Rio de Janeiro show on Friday night, Taylor Swift briefly stopped singing and asked her crew to hand out water to people in the crowd.
Temperatures in Rio climbed to nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, USA Today reported.
On Friday, a video posted to Instagram by fan page @swiftiesforeternity shows Swift getting up from the piano to point out fans who needed water.
"There's people that need water right here, maybe 30, 35, 40 feet back," she said. "So whoever is in charge of giving them that, just make sure that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are?"
As she tried to get water to the concertgoers, audience members began chanting: "Water, water, water."
In a video taken from another angle and posted by the account to TikTok on Friday night, Swift says, "We don't need to chant, it's totally fine. We just need to get water to them."
Another video from the same account showed Swift throwing a water bottle into the crowd while she sang her 2012 hit, "All Too Well."
The singer's Friday night show came amid a stifling heat wave in Brazil. The Associated Press reported that the heat index — a measure of how hot it "really feels," according to the National Weather Service — hit 137 degrees Fahrenheit in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday morning.
As the BBC reported on Wednesday, the National Institute of Meteorology issued extreme heat "red alerts" for more than 3,000 towns across the country.
Before Swift's show, a 23-year-old fan collapsed and later died of cardiac arrest, Business Insider previously reported. The fan, identified as Ana Clara Benevides, reportedly fainted ahead of Swift's set.
Before taking the stage later that night, Swift wrote on Instagram that she was "devastated" by Benevides' death.
"I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil," the singer wrote in an Instagram story.
According to the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, local firefighters said about 1,000 fans fainted due to the heat at the show. In total, there were about 60,000 people at the concert, the outlet reported.
Other concertgoers vomited and experienced "severe dehydration," per the outlet.
Brazil's soaring heat is the latest weather-related incident that Swift has experienced while on tour. On November 10, the artist postponed one of her shows in Argentina, citing "truly chaotic" weather.
"I'm never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performers and crew," Swift wrote on X.
