Naatu Naatu wins at the Golden Globes

Winners of the 80th edition of the Golden Globes were announced today. Naatu Naatu, from director Rajamouli’s RRR, won the award for Best Original Song. Composer M M Keeravani beat the likes of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna to win this award. Here are the other winners:

​Best Motion Picture – Drama

This year, Best Picture (drama) had impressive contenders like Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Fabelmans. Ultimately, Steven Spielberg’s coming-of-age drama The Fabelmans won the award.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Golden Globes separates the genres drama and musical or comedy when awarding Best Film and Best Actor. Though Everything Everywhere All at Once was a crowd favourite, The Banshees of Inisherin won the award for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy. Other nominees were Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Babylon, and Triangle of Sadness.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Cate Blanchett took home the award for playing the eponymous character in the psychological drama Tár. Other nominees included Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Ana de Armas (Blonde), and Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans).

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

The biographical drama Elvis won Austin Butler his first Golden Globe. Butler, who also won the AACTA Award for Best Actor for playing Elvis, beat Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Hugh Jackman (The Son), Bill Nighy (Living), and Jeremy Pope (The Inspection).

Best Actor and Actress - Musical or Comedy

Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress in a musical or comedy for the absurdist film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Colin Farrell won Best Actor in the category for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Best Director — Motion Picture

Though Avatar: The Way of Water grossed billions worldwide, James Cameron still lost Best Director to Steven Spielberg - who won it for The Fabelmans, the movie that’s loosely based on Spielberg’s adolescent years.

Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language

This was the second category RRR was nominated for, but it didn’t win. Argentinian historical drama Argentina, 1985 was awarded the Best Motion Picture - Non-English language. It’s also Argentina’s official entry for the Oscars.

Best Television Series – Drama

Seasoned shows like Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, and Severance lost the Best Television Series - Drama award to House of the Dragon — a spin-off of the hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones, set 200 years before the events in GoT.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

Despite tough competition from series like The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, and Wednesday, the American mockumentary series Abbott Elementary won the coveted award. The two-seasons-long series premiered in 2021.

Best TV Limited/Anthology Series, or Motion Picture for TV

Black comedy-drama series The White Lotus bagged this award, beating one of Netflix’s most popular English-language series, Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Other nominations were The Dropout, Black Bird and Pam & Tommy.

Justin Hurwitz won the award for the Best Original Score for Babylon while Ke Huy Quan won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Angela Bassett won the Best Actress in Supporting Role for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

For her role in Euphoria, Zendaya bagged the Best Actress in a drama series award, while Kevin Costner won the Best Actor in a drama series for Yellowstone.
