Sophie Turner found out that Joe Jonas had filed for divorce through the media, new petition claims
- Sophie Turner found out about her divorce from Joe Jonas through media reports, new petition says.
- Turner's attorneys say she and Jonas had a fight on August 15, leading Jonas to file for divorce.
Attorneys for Sophie Turner say the actor found out that Joe Jonas was filing for divorce from media reports, according to a new petition filed in Manhattan District Court on Thursday.
News broke that Jonas filed for divorce from Turner after four years of marriage on September 5.
According to the filing — in which Turner alleges that Jonas is wrongfully keeping their children in the US when their "permanent home" is in England — the "breakdown" of their marriage happened "very suddenly."
"The parties had an argument on August 15, 2023," Turner's attorneys say in the petition. "On or about September 1, 2023, the Father filed a divorce case against the Mother in Florida. On or about September 5, 2023, the Mother found out through the media that the Father had filed for divorce."
In a statement provided to Insider, a representative for Jonas refuted Turner's claim that she wasn't aware he planned to file for divorce.
"After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case," the rep said. "Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce."
Turner and Jonas began dating in 2016, the year she turned 20 and he 27. They got married in 2019 and welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Willa, the following year. Their second daughter was born in 2022.
The petition, filed by Turner's lawyers, says that in April 2023, Turner and Jonas agreed to "settle permanently" in England and were house hunting as recently as July.
"The parties' shared plan was to purchase the property together and raise their children together in the beautiful home and English country surroundings," Turner's attorneys say in the petition. It describes England as "the children's habitual residence" and says they've already become "integrated" in daily life across the pond, including "routine medical care," extracurricular activities, playdates, and nursery school.
According to the filing, Turner and Jonas made a plan for their children to join the Jonas Brothers on tour through August, while Turner finished filming a new drama series in England. She planned to collect the children in September.
Instead, Jonas filed for divorce in Miami, Florida, where the couple previously owned a house. They recently sold the property for $15 million, a move Turner's petition describes as "in furtherance of their shared plan to settle the family in England."
A rep for Jonas said in their statement to Insider that Turner and Jonas are both restricted from relocating the children due to a Florida court order.
The statement also says the former couple had a "cordial meeting" this past Sunday in New York, which gave Jonas the "impression" they would "work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup."
"Joe has already disavowed any and all statements purportedly made on his behalf that were disparaging of Sophie. They were made without his approval and are not consistent with his views," the statement continues. "His wish is that Sophie reconsider her harsh legal position and move forward in a more constructive and private manner. His only concern is the well-being of his children."
Turner's attorney did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
