Serena Williams has worked her way to fashion stardom, but the path wasn't always easy.

In an interview with People, the tennis pro reflected on her style evolution and said she "appreciates" her worst outfits — even those widely criticized.

"I've been on worst-dressed lists, and I don't care," she told the publication. "Listen, I think being on worst-dressed lists is important. I've loved every style that I've made, and you know, you don't love them looking back all the time, but I appreciate them."

Williams first displayed her fashion on tennis courts, wearing a mix of athleticwear and fashion-forward tutus. But as her career progressed, she turned to Hollywood styles.

She and her sister Venus began making fashionable appearances at events like the Teen Choice Awards in the early 2000s, and the duo studied fashion design in 2018 at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, The New York Times reported.

Williams also later served as a cochair of the 2019 Met Gala and became the first athlete to win the CFDA's Fashion Icon Award in 2023.

Speaking with People, Williams said that she views fashion as a form of self-expression and has always used clothes to show her personality to the world.

"And so for me, whether it's the best list or the worst-dressed list, it's all kind of cool," she told People. "Hey, at least I made a list."

She's also made major business moves in the fashion industry. After successful collaborations with brands like Nike, Williams launched her own brand, Serena, in 2018, which she displayed as S by Serena at New York Fashion Week in 2019.

According to Forbes, such ventures have led Williams to a fortune estimated to be around $290 million.

"I've had a lot of outfits. A lot of on-court outfits, a lot of off-court outfits. I've had some amazing, amazing red carpet looks," Williams told People. "I've had lots of different looks, but you know what, you can't take any of it back. I'm leaning into all of them."
