  • Perez Hilton said he regrets mocking Britney Spears.
  • The gossip writer told Sky News: "I absolutely apologize and carry deep shame and regret."
  • His comments came after Spears spoke about her conservatorship, saying she was "traumatized" by it.

The gossip writer Perez Hilton said he regrets the way he treated Britney Spears in the past.

He told Sky News on Thursday that he takes "full accountability" for it: "I can't say I was just young and dumb."

"I know I didn't express myself as well as I could have. I didn't lead with empathy and compassion," he said. "I absolutely apologize and carry deep shame and regret," he said.

Hilton - who was previously one of Spears' biggest critics - made the comments after the singer appeared in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday to formally request an end to her conservatorship, the legal guardianship that has put her estate, financial assets, and many aspects of her personal life under the control of her father and the Bessemer Trust since 2008.

Spears told the court in an emotional testimony that she had been "traumatized" and compared her life under the conservatorship to sex trafficking. Among other alarming allegations, Spears said that the team managing her conservatorship has prevented her from getting married.

The singer also said she has been blocked from having another child as the conservatorship team has refused to let a doctor remove her IUD, or intrauterine device - a contraceptive that must be placed, or removed, by a qualified healthcare provider.

"I'm not able to get married or have a baby, I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don't get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won't let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don't want me to have children - any more children," Spears told the Wednesday court hearing.

"This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good."
