Disney+ Hotstar devastates subscribers

Disney+Hotstar announced on social media that “Starting March 31, HBO content will be unavailable on Disney+ Hotstar” and left hundreds of its subscribers devastated.

​144 HBO originals to leave the platform​

HBO originals, including the famous Game of Thrones (GoT) series, dominated the platform. But, GoT is only one of the 144 shows leaving the platform. Here are a few that you should definitely catch before they go:

The White Lotus

A black comedy-drama, The White Lotus bagged ten Emmy awards. Each season follows a different murder mystery at a fictional White Lotus resort chain while uncovering the psychological and social issues affecting its guests and staff. It has been renewed for a third season.

The Gilded Age

As the name suggests, The Gilded Age is a historical drama set during the booming 1880s in New York City i.e. a period of rapid economic growth. The show premiered in January 2022 and a month later was renewed for a second season.

​Big Little Lies

Based on a 2014 novel of the same name, Big Little Lies is a critically acclaimed drama that takes on themes of domestic and sexual abuse and internalised misogyny. The winner of 8 Emmy awards, the show’s ensemble cast includes stars like Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and others.

​The Last of Us

The post-apocalyptic drama series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is the latest HBO original to catch everyone’s attention. The season finale will air on March 12. But the show has already been renewed for a second season which will not be available on the platform.

​House of the Dragon

The prequel to GoT, House of the Dragon is a fantasy drama set 200 years before the events of GoT. The Golden Globe Award winner is all set to return for a second season — but naturally, not on Disney+Hotstar.

Succession

BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Succession is a black comedy-drama, first aired in 2018. The series follows the Roy family as they fight to control the family business. Disney subscribers will be able to only watch the first episode of Season 4 (premiering on March 26) before the show goes off the platform.

Mare of Easttown

Winner of four Emmy awards, Mare of Easttown is a limited series starring Kate Winslet as the protagonist, a small-town detective investigating a murder. The 7-episode-long series was hailed for Winslet’s performance – with HBO Max crashing in the face of massive viewership during the finale episode.

Scenes from a Marriage

An adaptation of the 1970s Swedish miniseries of the same name, Scenes of a Marriage stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Praised for the leads’ crackling chemistry, the 5-episode long series follows the journey of a couple through marriage, separation, conflict, and lingering feelings of love.

The Sopranos

Easily one of the most famous crime dramas, The Sopranos premiered in 1999. Across its six seasons, the series follows the life of Italian-American mobster Tony Soprano. It’s the winner of two Golden Globes and 21 Emmy awards.

Euphoria

One of the most popular HBO originals in recent times, Euphoria is a teen drama starring Zendaya in the lead role of Rue Bennet. It covers topics of abuse, love and addiction. Though criticised for showcasing excessive nudity and sexual content in a teenage setting, the show has been praised for the cast’s performance.

Ballers

A sports comedy, the five-season-long drama premiered in 2015 and concluded in 2019. It stars former wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson as Spencer Strasmore, a retired footballer navigating his life as a financial manager of other professional footballers.

Barry

Barry is a comedy-drama starring Bill Hader as the titular hitman Barry Berkman who questions his life path after joining an acting class. The final season of the critically acclaimed series will premiere in April, 2023 — but not on Hotstar, sadly.
