- Netflix's "Harry and Meghan" is a hit in the US, based on Nielsen numbers.
- During the week that the second half of the series dropped, half its viewers were 50 or over.
Netflix's "Harry and Meghan," its docuseries from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is a hit with US viewers — mainly with one key demographic.
The series was watched for 1.7 billion minutes in the US from December 12 through December 18, the week that the second half of the six-episode series debuted on Netflix, according to Nielsen's streaming charts released Thursday. It marked a 34% increase in viewing from the previous week.
The series seems to be mostly attracting women over 50 years old. Half of the viewers in that week-long period were 50 or over, and a whopping 73% of viewers were women, according to Nielsen.
It's a somewhat surprising stat, given that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had a reputation for being popular among younger people.
Their interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 was watched by 17 million people when it aired live on CBS, and was particularly popular among those in the 18-49 age range, according to Nielsen ratings.
The pair struck a mega deal with the streaming giant in 2020 to produce content, which The New York Times and Us Magazine have reported to be worth around $100 million.
They've been making headlines in other ways recently, too, as Prince Harry's book "Spare," launched this week.
"The Crown," Netflix's dramatized Royals series, also leans older, but even moreso than "Harry and Meghan." When its fifth season debuted in November, Nielsen said that 60% of its viewers were over the age of 50.
