Netflix's 'Army of the Dead' is a strong contender for the Oscars' fan-favorite award
- Netflix's "Army of the Dead" was leading the Oscars' fan-favorite Twitter vote through Thursday.
- The movie topped other contenders like "Cinderella" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
Netflix's "Army of the Dead" was leading the Twitter vote for the Oscars "fan-favorite" movie through the final day of voting on Thursday, positioning it as a strong contender for the award.
The social-media analytics company Diesel Labs provided Insider with an analysis of the voting on Twitter, in which fans tweeted their favorite movie of 2021 along with the hashtags "#OscarsFanFavorite" and "#Sweepstakes."
The Oscars introduced the fan-favorite award this year in the face of dwindling ratings for the televised ceremony, in an apparent effort to drive engagement. The winner is expected to be announced during the show on March 27, though it's unclear if it will actually be awarded the coveted Oscar statuette.
People could also vote for their favorite movie through an online form, which the Diesel Labs analysis didn't account for. But it gives a good sense of which movies have the strongest chance to come out on top.
The analysis found that "Army of the Dead," a zombie-action movie directed by Zack Snyder, was leading other contenders like Amazon's "Cinderella" and Sony's "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which was the highest-grossing movie of 2021 at the worldwide box office.
The fan-favorite initiative has attracted loyal fandoms of Snyder, "Cinderella" actress Camila Cabello, and actor Johnny Depp, whose movie "Minamata" was also among the top five contenders through the final day of voting on Thursday, according to the analysis.
Depp's career was hindered after ex-wife and actress Amber Heard accused him of physical abuse in 2016, which he has denied. Still, his defenders propelled his little-seen new movie in the Oscars contest.
The top five movies leading the Twitter voting through Thursday, according to Diesel Labs, were:
- "Army of the Dead"
- "Cinderella"
- "Spider-Man: No Way Home"
- "Minamata"
- "Tick, Tick...Boom!"
