MTV cancels Paris awards show over concerns related to 'events in Israel and Gaza'

MTV says now is not the time to party and that "out of an abundance of caution," it will cancel a Paris awards show that was set to take place in about two weeks.

Citing the "volatility of world events," MTV, in a statement Thursday, announced it would not be hosting this year's Europe Music Awards, which were scheduled for November 5 at a Paris convention center.

"As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration," the network said. "With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning."

Although MTV did not specify any security threat, it said it acted out of concern for "the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life." Winning artists will still receive their awards, it added.

Earlier this month, the French government placed the country on high alert after an alleged Islamic State operative attacked and killed a school teacher in northern France. This November also marks eight years since Islamic State militants killed 130 people in an attack on the Bataclan Theater in the French capital.
