  • Streep and Don Gummer tied the knot in 1978, only months after her ex-partner John Cazale died.

Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer have been separated for "more than six years," a representative for the actor confirmed on Saturday.

The two met in 1978 and wed after Streep moved into Gummer's home following the death of her boyfriend, "The Godfather" actor John Cazale.

Streep and Gummer have four children: Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.

Take a look at the couple's 45-year relationship, from their marriage in 1978 to their final public appearance together at the 2018 Academy Awards.

In his biography of Streep, "Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep," Michael Schulman writes that the Academy Award winner met Gummer through her brother Harry when he turned up to help Streep pack up the New York apartment she and Cazale had previously shared.

Cazale, best known for his role in "The Godfather," died in March 1978 at the age of 42 after a battle with lung cancer. Streep had remained by his side throughout his illness.

Gummer eventually offered Streep a room in his home while he was away traveling.

The sculptor was well known at the time for his large-scale abstract sculptures, and his work had displayed in gallery exhibitions around the world since 1973, People reported.

The couple married six months after Cazale's death.

According to an announcement of the nuptials published in The Lewiston Daily Sun on October 3, 1978, the wedding took place in the garden of Steep's parents' home on Mason's Island, Connecticut.

Schulman wrote that her mother wasn't exactly thrilled with how quickly things had progressed between the couple, which put a strain on their relationship.

The couple welcomed four children together: Henry, 43, Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32.

A year after Streep and Gummer tied the knot, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Henry Wolfe Gummer.

The couple then welcomed three daughters; Mary Willa "Mamie" Gummer, Grace Jane Gummer, and Louisa Jacobson Gummer.

In 2002, Streep revealed how she and Gummer had been able to sustain their relationship over the decades.

"Goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while," she told Vogue.

"There's no road map on how to raise a family: It's always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can't imagine eschewing one for the other."

Henry Wolfe has released several solo albums and appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," while all three of their daughters have followed their mother into the acting world.

Mamie played the lead role on the show "Emily Owens, MD," Grace has appeared in hit series such as "The Newsroom" and "Mr. Robot," and Louisa is best known for her starring role in "The Gilded Age."

"First, I'm going to thank Don," she said as soon as she walked on stage to collect the award, per Indie Wire.

"Because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you've given me," she continued.

Streep was nominated for best actress for her role in "The Post" in 2018 and appeared at the Academy Awards ceremony with Gummer. But the pair had already separated by that time, a representative for Streep told Insider.

The representative said on Saturday that Gummer and Streep "have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

Despite the confirmation of their separation, Streep was seen wearing her wedding ring at the Princess of Asturias Awards 2023 Ceremony on Friday, Fox News reported.

It's not known if the couple plan to divorce, and representatives for Streep did not respond to Insider's request for comment on the matter.
