- Matthew Perry was found dead after an apparent drowning on Saturday. He was 54.
- The actor was discovered unresponsive in his hot tub, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Just six days before his apparent drowning, actor Matthew Perry posted an Instagram photo of himself in a hot tub.
According to The Los Angeles Times, police arrived at the actor's Los Angeles-area home around 4 p.m. on Saturday, where they found him unresponsive in the hot tub. He was 54 years old. The anonymous sources who spoke with the Times did not cite a cause of death but reported no foul play was suspected. The investigation into Perry's death is ongoing.
In a post to Instagram on October 23, Perry can be seen in a hot tub, wearing headphones and looking out over the horizon.
"Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I'm Mattman," the post's caption read.
The post was one of several since October 17 referencing "Mattman," many of which included photos of Batman's signature bat-shaped emblem. Another post from the same day was captioned: "Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you? - I'm Mattman."
Before his death, Perry had a long career as an actor and comedian, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom "Friends" — though he once said he didn't want to be remembered for his time on the show when he died.
In a 2022 interview with podcaster Tom Power, Perry said he wanted to be known for helping people facing substance abuse instead. The actor often spoke about his decades-long addiction to alcohol and opioids.
"The best thing about me, bar none, is that if somebody comes to me and says, 'I can't stop drinking, can you help me?' I can say 'yes' and follow up and do it," Perry said.
"When I die, I don't want 'Friends' to be the first thing that's mentioned," he continued. "I want that to be the first thing that's mentioned. And I'm gonna live the rest of my life proving that."
