'Manifest' won't be revived after NBC cancelled it, even though it's gained steam on Netflix
  • NBC canceled "Manifest" after three seasons last week.
  • Data shows it gained popularity after the first two seasons became available on Netflix this month.
  • But the show won't be revived for a fourth season at another network after talks fell through.

NBC canceled its sci-fi mystery series "Manifest" last week after three seasons - just as it was gaining popularity on Netflix.

Calls for the show to be revived quickly started online. Its creator and showrunner Jeff Rake tweeted, "Hoping to find a new home. You the fans deserve an ending to your story" with the hashtag "#savemanifest."

But talks fell through on Monday to revive the series at another company, and the show won't be getting a fourth season, according to a source familiar with the effort. (Deadline reported on Friday that conversations were happening between Netflix and Warner Bros. TV, which produced the series.)

The show's first two seasons became available to stream on Netflix earlier this month (the third season is on NBCUniversal's Peacock, where it's available to stream for free, and Hulu).

The show has spent the last 10 days as the No. 1 TV series on Netflix's daily popularity rankings in the US, according to the streaming search engine Reelgood. It spent at least a week as the top overall title. Netflix counts a view if an account watches at least two minutes of a movie or show, which is how it calculates its daily rankings. The lists reflect the previous 24 hours.

Some fans had hoped Netflix might revive "Manifest" in the way it did "Lucifer," a Warner Bros. TV series that Fox canceled in 2018. "Lucifer" has been so popular for Netflix that the streamer reversed course and renewed the series for a sixth (and final) season after initially announcing the show would end with its fifth season. The show was the most "in-demand" streaming series in the US as of last week, according to Parrot Analytics. Parrot Analytics measures audience demand, which accounts for how engaged an audience is with a show, or its overall popularity.

But fans new and old won't be seeing a proper conclusion to "Manifest." And though it's gaining momentum and topping Netflix's charts, it was still just the 44th most "in-demand" series across all platforms in the US over the last 30 days, according to Parrot Analytics. That suggests its Netflix popularity could be temporary.

Rake alluded to the show ending in a thank-you tweet to fans on Monday evening:
