The new Netflix documentary "Lover, Stalker, Killer" tells the story of a love triangle in Nebraska that ended in tragedy.

Dave Kroupa, a recently single 35-year-old mechanic living in Omaha was casually dating 42-year-old Liz Golyar, a cleaner, in 2012. The pair had similar interests and enjoyed going drinking together.

However, Kroupa's life was turned upside down when Golyar got jealous after he started seeing another woman.

Kroupa met 37-year-old Cari Farver, who was a computer programmer at the garage where he worked, and asked her out after finding her online dating profile. The pair started seeing each other regularly over a two-week period and Farver occasionally stayed over with Kroupa.

While leaving Kroupa's apartment building on the 13th of November, 2012, Farver crossed paths with Golyar, who had come to get some of her belongings. Farver went missing and was never seen again, and for several years it was unclear what happened to her after that brief encounter.

In 2016, the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office learned that Golyar stabbed Farver to death in her car on or around the same day. Her body was never found.

But between 2012 and 2015, Golyar pretended to be Farver by sending thousands of abusive and threatening messages to Kroupa, pretending that Farver was stalking them both.

Per ABC News, one message Golyar wrote to Kroupa read: "I hate you so much that I want to drive a knife in your heart."

The police started to suspect Golyar was behind the disappearance in 2015, thanks to data that proved she was using fake emails to harass Kroupa. And they also discovered photos of Farver's body on an SD Card belonging to Golyar in early 2017.

Golyar was convicted of first-degree murder in August 2017 after a trial in Nebraska, and was given a life sentence.

Dave Kroupa now lives in Nebraska with his new girlfriend

Since losing Farver and seeing Golyar go to prison, Kroupa has moved on with his life — but still feels remorse over meeting Cari.

At the end of “Lover, Stalker, Killer,” he says: “I’m very sorry for what happened. If I hadn’t have met Cari, she wouldn’t have met Liz, and this all wouldn’t have happened."

Kroupa stayed in Nebraska after the incident, but he now lives with his new girlfriend, Maggie Hover.

The pair spoke to PEOPLE in February about how the incident changed Kroupa's life. Hover explained that Kroupa only just started to relax while they were away on a recent trip to California together.

"He said, 'I don't have to be looking over my shoulder,'" she recalled.

Kroupa also told the outlet that he's careful about sharing his contact details because of Golyar. He said: "I don't mind watching a movie with a terrible twist, but I never want that in my life again."

In 2020, Kroupa told ABC News: "I want Liz to go away and never do this to anybody again. Nancy [Farver’s mother] and Cari's son were foremost … in my mind … They're, unfortunately, the ones that have to live with the repercussions."
