Lauren London was uniquely positioned to understand the impact of the violence in Tom Clancy's "Without Remorse" after losing her long-term partner, rapper and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle, in 2019.
It's the same year the actress filmed the movie in which she plays Michael B. Jordan's pregnant onscreen wife, Pam Clarke, who gets killed. It's the launchpad for Navy SEAL Sr. Chief John Kelly (Jordan) to not only get revenge for his slain wife, but to also uncover an international conspiracy.
"I really resonated with Michael's character, his pain, and his loss in this film," London told Insider earlier this month while promoting the film.
In "Without Remorse," Pam continues to come to John in dreams and while he's in a coma to serve as a spiritual support system to her spouse after her transition. It's an idea - that the dead never really leave you - that London said she appreciated.
It's an "awareness that no one really dies," she added. "Energy and spirit [living] on are things that I really believe in. And I really loved how after Pam's fate, she appears throughout the film as a guiding voice and comfort."
Her favorite scene of her 11-day shoot was the reappearance of her character near fire. She valued "the truth of it," she said.
"Anyone that has ever lost anyone that you can't physically see, it's just comforting to know that they're possibly, always with you."
London interviewed a military spouse to prepare for the role in the film, which also stars Jodie Turner-Smith, Jamie Bell, and Colman Domingo. It allowed her to view partnership through a new lens.
"That was new to me. I didn't know any women that were Navy SEAL wives," she admitted, noting that military spouses have to be open to the idea of their spouse's many responsibilities. "She was aware that he was another way somewhere else and ... she had to hold space for him and balance those two sides of him."
London hasn't slowed down since wrapping "Without Remorse" two years ago. She's been engaging in other aspects of the creative process, including production.
"I'm actually creating something right now, for television," she revealed.
And after years of portraying loving and supportive partners, in projects, including "ATL," "The Game," "This Christmas," and "Games People Play," London said she's ready to step into a role with a bit more agency.
The actress can see herself as an action hero.
"I would love to do more action and lead an action film. I think that would be fun and a great change for me," London said. "I would love to get down and grimy and gritty and real with it."
"Without Remorse" is now available on Amazon Prime.
