Actor Kevin Spacey has been charged with four counts of sexual assault against three men in the UK on Thursday.

The 62-year-old Hollywood star was also charged with one count of "causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent," the UK's Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement.

"The charges follow a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation," the statement continued. "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr. Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial."

The statement said the alleged assault incidents occurred in 2005, 2008, and 2013. The alleged 2005 and 2008 incidents occurred in London, while the alleged 2013 incident occurred in Gloucestershire. Additional information about the allegations was not made immediately public.

Insider has requested comment from Spacey's attorney.

Spacey has previously been accused of sexual misconduct. The first accuser to publicly come forward was the actor Anthony Rapp in 2017, near the start of the #MeToo movement. Rapp alleged that Spacey made unwanted sexual advances towards him when Rapp was just 14 years old.

Spacey issued a public apology at the time, saying he did not recall the incident, but that it would have been "deeply inappropriate drunken behavior." Spacey finished his statement by coming out as a gay man.

Spacey was later sued by Rapp and an unidentified accuser, though the unidentified accuser refused to publicly identify himself as required by the court.

Spacey was also charged in Massachusetts on allegations of fondling an 18-year-old man, but prosecutors dropped the charge after the accuser invoked his Fifth Amendment right and refused to testify. Spacey had pleaded not guilty.

In the wake of the #MeToo allegations, Spacey was booted from a number of projects, including the Netflix hit "House of Cards."
