Jennifer Aniston says she was texting her "Friends" costar Matthew Perry just hours before his death, and that he seemed happy and healthy.
Perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on October 28. He was 54.
According to Aniston, who played Rachel Green in "Friends," the actor was doing well before his death.
Aniston told Variety in an interview published Monday: "He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that's all I know."
"I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn't struggling," she added.
Aniston was interviewed by Variety alongside her "The Morning Show" costar Reese Witherspoon, who also made guest appearances in "Friends" as Rachel's sister, Jill.
In the interview, Witherspoon said it was important that fans knew Perry, who played Chandler Bing in "Friends," was in a much better place before he died. Aniston agreed.
"I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy," said Aniston. "He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one."
"I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard," she continued.
Before his death, Perry was open about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction.
Speaking to ABC's Diane Sawyer in October 2022 about his memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry recalled how Aniston frequently tried to help him while he dealt with his addiction issues.
"She was the one who reached out the most. I'm really grateful to her for that," he said.
In the memoir, the "17 Again" star also wrote about how Aniston confronted him on the "Friends" set about his drinking, and said that he was devastated by the conversation.
