Jenn Tran's emotional season of "The Bachelorette" is over, but the ongoing real-life drama is eclipsing the events of the show.
Jenn, who first appeared on Joey Graziadei's season of "The Bachelor," got another chance at love on season 21 of "The Bachelorette." Although her journey ended with a historic proposal to Devin Strader, the couple didn't get a happy ending.
Here's a complete timeline of their breakup and the drama that followed in the aftermath of their controversial After the Final Rose special.
September 3, 2024: Jenn and Devin's engagement on the season 21 finale of "The Bachelorette" airs.
In the finale, which aired on ABC on September 3, Jenn made history as the first Bachelorette to propose to her winner.
"I love you so deeply, Devin. But, I can't let you propose to me," Jenn said. "I decided to choose myself in this journey. And, the best version of myself is when I'm with you. I'm strong on my own, but I know that we're stronger together."
She then presented Devin with a ring, and he, in turn, also proposed to her.
But their relationship wouldn't last very long after leaving the show.
During the live portion of the finale, Jenn reveals that Devin broke up with her in August during a 15-minute phone call.
Before the proposal was shown on TV, host Jesse Palmer brought out an emotional Jenn to reveal the surprising status of their relationship. She explained that after leaving Hawaii engaged, she felt like Devin was acting distant.
"It kind of just felt like he was pulling away all the promises that he had made to me — wanting to move somewhere together, and wanting to have this future planned out, and wanting to see each other all the time," she said.
Jenn said that Devin called her one day and "basically broke off the engagement," saying that he didn't love her anymore and regretted getting engaged. She said that she fought for the relationship, but he had already mentally checked out.
After Devin joined the stage during the live finale, Jenn confronted him.
"I can try to understand somebody changing their mind about the way they feel," she said. "What I can't understand is everything you did after you had broken our engagement. The next day I wake up to you following girls on Instagram — not just any girl, but Maria," Jenn said, referencing Maria Georgas, who also competed on Joey's season of "The Bachelor" and was offered the role of the Bachelorette but turned it down.
Devin admitted that he failed Jenn, but insisted that his feelings for her were genuine.
"When we left the show, I had a lot of doubts," he said. "And regretfully and sadly, I repressed those feelings. But I did come clean about that."
Then, in a moment that garnered backlash from Bachelor Nation, Jenn and Devin were forced to watch their proposal for the first time together in front of a live audience.
Jenn, who sobbed while watching the footage, said that she didn't regret proposing to the version of Devin that she got to know on the show.
"That man doesn't exist anymore, and the truth of the matter is, I'm still that same woman I am," she said.
After the finale airs, Jenn seemingly tells fans not to direct hate at Devin.
In an Instagram Story that has since been deleted, Jenn reportedly expressed her gratitude for her fans' support but said that she doesn't condone cyberbullying.
"There is no need to rub salt in anyone's wound and truly supporting me you will understand that I lead with love and empathy," she wrote.
"I do not believe in spreading negative energy," she added.
"People can be held accountable for their own actions in their lives without cyberbullying. The universe will work it all out."
Jenn, who has previously spoken about receiving rude comments after she was announced as the latest Bachelorette, said that she's "going to be okay but spreading hate or direct harm to someone else does not help my healing journey."
September 4, 2024: Jenn says that as painful as it was for her, she wanted Devin to watch the proposal at the finale.
The morning after the disastrous "Bachelorette" finale, Jenn was announced as one of the contestants on the upcoming season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."
During various press interviews conducted on September 4, the finale was inevitably brought up.
Jenn told E! News that she knew her and Devin's reunion would be emotional — for her at least — because "he had been dodging calls and I hadn't talked to him or seen him in a month."
She also told Us Weekly that she was aware that the proposal would be shown during the live finale and she wanted Devin to see it.
Jenn elaborated on that moment in an interview with Glamour, saying that the "Bachelorette" team gave a rundown of the plan, including the fact that she'd be watching the proposal.
"I was very, very anxious that night and so my emotions were just all over the place from the beginning," she said. "It was a very hard thing to do to watch it back with him, but I also knew that it needed to be done because I wanted him to watch that part."
September 4, 2024: Bachelor Nation star Ashley Iaconetti says that Devin slid into one of her friend's DMs ahead of the finale airing.
In an episode of "The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast," Iaconetti, a former "Bachelor" and "Bachelor in Paradise" contestant and Bachelor Nation staple, said that she managed to last most of season 21 without any spoilers about how Jenn's journey would play out. That is, until, a friend mentioned that Devin messaged her before the finale.
"Within the past week, I heard from a really good friend who said that Devin had slid into her DMs," she said. "And that sort of spoiled things for me a little bit. I didn't know exactly how it was going to end, but I knew that they weren't together."
When former Bachelor Higgins asked if this friend is from the show, Iaconetti said no, "which makes it worse."
Iaconetti said that her friend was a fan of the show and followed Devin online because she liked his personality.
"Then, he DM'd her," she said.
September 5, 2024: Jenn says she's "still healing" after her "Bachelorette" journey.
On Instagram, Jenn thanked the fans who have supported her and said she's been experiencing "a rollercoaster of emotions."
"Although this love story didn't end the way I had hoped… What you guys have seen is a snippet of our love story and two real people navigating a complicated situation," she captioned her post.
"While emotions were high on stage, at the end of the day, I will always have love for the person I fell in love with and I am choosing to wish him the best in his journey of life and will always root for him," she added.
Jenn concluded her message by saying that she's "still healing."
"It's been difficult processing the past few months and it will continue to be difficult for me to fully understand my own heart at this moment," she said. "However, what I do know is that I am worthy of an unconditional and unwavering love whenever that love may come."
September 5, 2024: Maria Georgas reacts to being name-dropped on the finale and clarifies that she doesn't personally know Devin.
In a lenghty video shared on TikTok, Maria said that the finale was "hard to watch" as a former contestant and as a viewer. She also said that some of the conversations between Jenn and Devin should have happened off-camera.
"I am constantly trying to move past a lot of things that I've done in this franchise," she said. "I'm over coming to defense for my character."
Maria added that she respected Jenn for speaking up in the finale, but hearing her name mentioned without additional context "leads people to believe a whole different narrative."
Maria confirmed that Devin had followed her on Instagram, but said she wasn't aware at the time because she doesn't monitor her followers.
"I had no clue about that until people brought it to my attention," she said. "And by that time, when I found out, he had unfollowed. Let me clear the air on something: I have never met Devin before."
In an interview published with People the following day, Jenn explained why she mentioned Maria on the finale.
"I knew it was going to make this big splash, but for me it was important to highlight the ways in which Devin disrespected me," she said. "It has nothing to do with Maria. I know that nothing happened."
September 10, 2024: Jenn says on the "Off the Vine" podcast that Devin was "DMing girls" and that she made excuses for him in their relationship.
Jenn said that Devin ended their relationship in early August, but there were red flags that she excused leading up to the breakup.
"There's an adjustment period," she said. "And for me, I was being very gracious with that, with the fact that we have so much love for each other, but we just gotta figure out how to make this work in the real world."
She said that Devin didn't put effort into their long-distance relationship in the two months that they dated after the show, and didn't follow through on bold proclamations that he previously made.
She said she's unsure about the extent of his interactions with other women, but "he was DMing girls, and I saw some of those messages."
"I think that's the most hurtful part — like, 'What was your game plan all along?'" she said.
Despite the heartbreak, Jenn said that she reached out to Devin after the live finale to "wish him the best."
"And then I started getting DMs from girls and all this stuff that made me upset," she said. "I was done. We haven't talked, no. After that, there's no excusing for that behavior."
September 10, 2024: In a since-deleted video shared on Instagram, Devin speaks out about the breakup for the first time since the finale.
"All I'm looking to do here is tell my side, take accountability, and apologize for some of the things that I wasn't able to say at AFR," Devin said in the 13-minute video.
"We both had mistakes along the way, but the love that Jenn and I had, and the love especially that I had for Jenn, is not something that I'm attempting to lie about," he said.
Devin said that navigating their relationship in the real world after the show ended "was an uphill battle" and he felt like he "wasn't good enough, no matter how much effort I would put in."
"It continued to take an emotional toll on me," he said. "At that point, I really did have to make just a decision based on my own happiness because, again, at the end of the day, what's best for me is what's best for me."
Devin also shared supposed text messages between him and Jenn, which were sent during their relationship and after the breakup.
"By no means am I looking to denounce Jenn in any way," he said. "By no means am I looking to come at her in any way or say anything negative about her. All I'm trying to do here is show this was a two-way relationship, and I think we could both be held accountable."
Devin's video was met with backlash, specifically for sharing their private text messages, some of which were intimate ones. According to E! News, he then deleted and reuploaded the video with redacted messages. However, that video has also been deleted from his Instagram profile.
Devin then reportedly shared a since-deleted Instagram Story apologizing for sharing sensitive messages and asking for forgiveness.
"I deeply am so sorry for showing sensitive information from the bottom of my heart," he reportedly wrote. "That was not my intention. My only intention is to show the relationship from my perspective."
"I gain nothing from that text conversation being shown. I promise you that was a mistake," he said, adding, "I honestly missed this one and fucked up."
September 12, 2024: Jenn says she feels "betrayed" and "disrespected" by Devin for posting their texts.
Jenn returned to "The Viall Files" to continue discussing the drama. In an interview recorded the day after Devin's Instagram video, she explained that she hadn't seen it and didn't plan on watching it. She added that she had "no idea" why Devin would release their private texts.
"I truthfully felt so betrayed, so disrespected, and honestly just upset and disappointed," she said. "I don't have a problem with him going out there and saying what he needs to say, but I have a problem with him invading my privacy and releasing texts without telling me, without giving me notice."
Jenn also said she'd received messages from people who'd claimed they saw Devin out with other women and referenced footage of him hanging out with a woman in New York before the finale's release.
"At this point, I want to be done and I want to put this in the past," she said. "This is the last time I'm talking about this, because this is not what I want. I don't need this breakup to be drawn out for six months. I'm done with it and I'm ready to move on."
September 17, 2024: Entertainment Weekly and Bachelor Nation blogger Reality Steve report that Devin's ex-girlfriend had a restraining order against him.
In a video posted on YouTube, Reality Steve said that he was tipped off about Devin's past via Instagram. The blogger said that about 12 days before the final rose ceremony, someone messaged him and said their friend had a restraining order against Devin.
This was corroborated by Entertainment Weekly, which reported that Devin's unnamed ex successfully petitioned for a restraining order against him in March 2017. In the restraining order petition, the ex reportedly accused Devin of abuse.
According to documents obtained by EW, the ex accused Devin, who lived two doors down, of burglarizing her house after their breakup. EW reported that Devin was arrested on burglary charges and pleaded guilty.
The revelation reverberated through Bachelor Nation, with some upset that Devin's criminal history had slipped through the cracks of the show's casting department.
"How did this man get past the casting background checks? Any man with a restraining order and an arrest on his history shouldn't be allowed to set foot in the mansion," Suzana Somers, who runs the popular Instagram account @bachelordata account, said in a post about Devin's arrest.
A source close to production told EW: "We take the safety of our contestants very seriously and make every effort to conduct thorough diligence. As exhaustive as our vetting process is, this protective order did not surface in our searches."
