Jared Leto ate an energy bar in front of a Michelin-starred chef instead of the meal they prepared, says comedian Mae Martin

Jared Leto once refused to eat a meal prepared by a Michelin-starred chef at a celebrity event, choosing instead to snack on an energy bar he brought with him, according to comedian Mae Martin.

Martin, who uses they/them pronouns, shared the anecdote about the "Morbius" actor on the latest episode of the podcast "Handsome," which they cohost with Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster.

"I did go to an event where Jared Leto was at the same table as me, and he was sitting across from me, and he has the vibe of a sort of cult leader in his shades and his long hair," Martin said.

"There was this amazing chef, like a Michelin star chef. And the food was amazing," they continued.

However, Martin said Leto — who has adhered to a vegan/vegetarian diet for decades — refrained from touching what was on his plate.

"So the chef comes out at one point and is like, 'I hope you're enjoying the meal,' and Jared Leto goes, 'I'm not going to eat it,' and we're all like, 'Oh, OK, yeah,'" they said.

Martin said Leto explained that he "got food poisoning at one of these things once," so he decided to play it safe by not eating the chef's food.

Despite the chef assuring him he would not experience a repeat incident with the food they had prepared, Martin said that Leto was firm in his decision and even came prepared.

"He reaches in his jacket, and he pulls out a power bar, like an energy bar, and he's like, 'That's why I always bring these,'" Martin said.

"And he opens it and starts eating it in front of the chef," they concluded.

Representatives for Leto did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Leto recently found himself the subject of social-media memes after he was spotted sitting at a table alone at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.
