Laapataa Ladies tells the story of two brides in rural India who accidentally get swapped during a train journey in 2001, delivering a poignant yet satirical take on patriarchy. With its engaging narrative, the film resonates deeply with viewers and leaves a lasting impact. The film’s success is evident as it enjoyed praise during its theatrical and OTT releases, and even had a special screening at the Supreme Court of India in the presence of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao.

Expressing her joy, director Kiran Rao said, "I am deeply honoured and delighted that Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life."
She further added, "Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope this film will resonate with audiences worldwide, just as it has in India."
The film emerged as the unanimous choice of a 13-member selection committee headed by renowned Assamese director Jahnu Barua, who chose Laapataa Ladies from 29 contending films, including notable titles like Srikanth, Vaazhai, Thangalaan, Ullozhukku.
