- Hugh Grant says he was offered more "interesting" roles when he stopped doing rom-coms.
- The 63-year-old actor spoke about his career in recent years on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Hugh Grant may be known for all the romantic comedies he's starred in, but he's excited that those days are behind him.
In an interview with Drew Barrymore on The Drew Barrymore Show, the 63-year-old actor reflects on his career and the projects that he's taken on in recent years.
"I got too old and fat and ugly to do romantic comedies, obviously, so I got off with more interesting things," Grant told Barrymore.
The actor added that growing older and accomplishing different things in his personal life has helped improve his acting chops.
"I got a bit better," Grant said. "I got a little less bad after I had children, got married, got happier."
Elsewhere in the interview, Grant reflected on how he didn't always feel at ease playing the "sweet roles" he was given in rom-coms.
"I love those films. I love the fact that people still like them, but I never felt really comfortable doing them," Grant told Barrymore. He added he preferred roles that gave him "more of a mask."
"I want to be someone else. Then it frees me up and then I quite like acting," Grant continued.
He then joked that playing an Oompa Loompa in "Wonka" was a role that felt closest to who he was in real life.
Grant rose to prominence by starring in romantic comedies such as "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Notting Hill," and "Bridget Jones's Diary" back in the '90s and early '00s.
He also starred alongside Barrymore in the 2007 rom-com "Music and Lyrics."
In recent years, he's chosen to act in different types of projects, including "Paddington 2" and "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
Grant's latest movie "Wonka," which features Timothée Chalamet in the titular role, is set to be released on December 15.
