While speaking with Insider about kids beverage Creative Roots, Hilary Duff said she feels optimistic about the "Lizzie McGuire" reboot despite her previous creative differences with Disney.
The revival, which follows Lizzie (Duff) as a 30-year-old adult living in New York City, was announced in November 2019 for release on Disney's streaming service Disney Plus in 2020.
In January, production came to a halt after Terri Minksy, the original show's creator, stepped down from the project.
"Obviously, there was some creative bumps that we came across," Duff told Insider. "We started shooting and then took a break for the holidays and then kind of needed to like regroup to all get on the same page creatively."
In February, the actress requested to move the reboot to Hulu instead of Disney Plus, which only streams PG-13 and TV-14 content, to make Lizzie's experience more "authentic."
"It's important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable. It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again," she wrote on Instagram.
Since then, Duff says that she's been talking to Disney "several times a week" about the project.
"I will say that there's been a lot of conversations," she said. "We're both feeling hopeful."
Duff added, "I really want it to be right, and I know Disney really wants it to be right for them and fitting for them, so I think we'll get there."
While she didn't give an update on the new release date, original cast members including Adam Lamberg, Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas will reunite for the reboot.
During her conversation with Insider, Duff spoke about showing "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" to her son Luca for the first time.
"He liked it. He wasn't like obsessed with it by any means, but he's an 8 year old boy," she said, explaining that he prefers the Disney Channel show since it's shorter. Duff joked that until he was 6 1/2, her son thought anything except for a cartoon was a commercial.
"If it was live action, he'd be like, 'Ugh, commercial.' I'm like, 'It's not a commercial. It's a movie!'" she joked.
Duff is currently promoting Creative Roots, an all-natural kids beverage that she's used to keep her children hydrated this summer. The drinks come in four flavors: Watermelon Lemonade, Peach Mango, Orange Pineapple and Mixed Berry.
"My kids are powering through them," Duff said. "I feel better about giving them something I know is hydrating them."
