Here's where every major 'Yellowstone' character ended up ahead of season 5, part 2

Season five saw John Dutton move into the world of politics and become governor of Montana in one of the most unexpected storylines to date on the show.

But by the end of the first half of the season, John was facing impeachment.

In his personal life, John also reignited his unlikely romance with animal rights activist Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo), who was living at the ranch under house arrest after John used his political power to get her out of prison.

Whether any of these storylines will get resolved is still up in the air. Costner has repeatedly said that he has cut ties with the series following scheduling issues and reports of tensions between him and Sheridan.

However, Costner does appear in trailers for the new episodes released by Paramount Network ahead of the show's return.

Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) has earned herself a reputation as being a cutthroat businesswoman and a bit of a loose cannon, meaning that she has helped the family ranch almost as much as she has harmed it over the years.

The first half of season five saw Beth spin out of control a few times — she got arrested after punching up another woman in a bar and also got physical with John's new girlfriend during a family dinner.

She also appeared to be fighting some personal demons as she contemplated all the wrong she had done to Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) over the years, despite now being happily married.

One unresolved storyline that was brought back in the first half of season five is the fact that Beth is unable to have biological children, as Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) had a doctor give her a hysterectomy when she became pregnant as a teenager, leaving her infertile.

Beth ended the season vowing to kill Jamie for all the harm he had done to the family over the years.

Jamie, who was adopted by the Duttons as an infant, has spent much of the last five seasons flitting between working for John and trying to destroy him.

After John thwarted his ambitions of becoming Governor of Montana (by taking the role for himself), an incensed Jamie came up with a way to get John impeached from office with the help of his new love interest, Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri).

When audiences last saw Jamie, he had put forward a request for a tribunal to the Senate.

After learning of this, Beth paid him a visit and promised to rain hellfire on them both unless Jamie withdrew the request.

When we last saw Jamie, he was calling up Sarah's shady contacts for a hitman-for-hire who could permanently remove Beth from the picture.

The last time audiences saw Rip Wheeler, he was bound for Texas on a yearlong secondment to the 6666 ranch — which is actually owned by series cocreator Sheridan in real life — following a disastrous outbreak of brucellosis among the Yellowstone ranch's cattle.

Elsewhere in the season, viewers learned through a series of flashbacks about Rip's early days at the Yellowstone ranch and how he came to have a lifelong loyalty to the Duttons.

The chairman of the Broken Rock Reservation, Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), has been the Duttons' longest-standing adversary but didn't appear much in the first half of season five.

Audiences saw him butt heads with cutthroat attorney Angela Blue Thunder (Q'orianka Kilcher) as she aggressively campaigned on behalf of the chairman's young rival Martin (Martin Sensmeier).

Elsewhere in season five, Rainwater and John found common ground in their opposition to a proposed new pipeline in Montana that would run directly through the reservation.

As the last surviving legitimate son of John Dutton, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) has been the frontrunner to inherit the sprawling ranch from his father ever since his older brother Lee (Dave Annable) was killed back in season one.

While he's not always followed that path, in the season five midseason finale, Kayce was given a taste of his future when his father asked him to take over the day-to-day running of Yellowstone while he focused on his role as governor.

Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), who is the granddaughter of Broken Rock tribe elder Felix Long (Rudy Ramos) and daughter-in-law to John Dutton, was pregnant and expecting her second son with her husband Kayce when the season began.

However, she lost the baby after she went into labor early and got into a crash while driving herself to the hospital.

Their baby — whom they named John Dutton IV — was laid to rest in what is shown to be a traditional ceremony among the Native Americans in the Broken Rock tribe. Shortly afterward, Monica and Kayce moved into the Dutton home with their older son Tate (Brecken Merrill).
