FX's "Shōgun" is a new series that takes viewers into 1600s Edo-era Japan, adapting James Clavell's novel and drawing on real-life history.

The show stars Hiroyuki Sanada (also a producer) as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a figure akin to the real-life shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu. When Englishman John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) washes ashore, he becomes an important figure in Toranaga's power struggle. Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a noblewoman, serves as their translator.

The series, created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, features a cast composed primarily of Japanese actors. Here's the show's main cast and who they're playing.
