Gypsy Rose Blanchard says she regrets conspiring to kill her mother, Claudine "Dee Dee" Blanchard.
In a new interview with People, Gypsy — who was released on parole last week after serving 8 years for the second-degree murder of her mother — reflected on her emotional state back then.
"It was panic, desperation," Gypsy told People. "Because I was facing yet another surgery pretty soon, and I really did not want to have the surgery."
The 32-year-old explained she was due to undergo a procedure on her larynx to find out the cause of her high-pitched voice, which she said doctors thought could have been due to a breathing problem.
Even though she expressed she didn't want to have the surgery, Gypsy said her mother paid no attention to her objections.
"She's like, 'You're having it,' and that's it. There's no discussion to be had. And I felt in my heart, please change your mind. This life needs to change," Gypsy said.
In 2015, Gypsy asked her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill her mother, per People.
Dee Dee was widely believed to have Munchausen by proxy, a rare mental illness where a caretaker makes up fake symptoms of illness.
According to Gypsy, Dee Dee spent years subjecting her to painful and unnecessary medical treatments, even forcing her to use a wheelchair and feeding tubes, per People.
"It's not like I didn't think about every other option besides murder. I did," Gypsy said.
That said, she isn't sure what she would have done if given a second chance to relive her life.
"If I had another chance to redo everything, I don't know if I would go back to when I was a child and tell my aunts and uncles that I'm not sick and mommy makes me sick," she told People. "Or, if I would travel back to just the point of that conversation with Nick and tell him, 'You know what, I'm going to go tell the police everything.' I kind of struggle with that."
Even though she's trying to move forward with her life, she still feels remorse for her actions.
"Nobody will ever hear me say I'm glad she's dead or I'm proud of what I did," Gypsy said. "I regret it every single day."
