Grimes said in an Instagram comment Sunday that she andElon Musk had changed the name of their newborn baby.- Their son was originally named X Æ A-12, but the "Miss Anthropocene" singer told curious followers that they'd changed his name to X Æ A-Xii.
- "Roman numerals. Looks better tbh," Grimes wrote in a comment.
- After the singer and Musk announced their child's name earlier this month, many highlighted a California law that allows only the 26 letters of the English alphabet, as well as certain punctuation, to be included on a birth certificate.
Grimes said on Instagram on Sunday that she and Elon Musk had renamed their newborn baby, a move that seemed meant to comply with California law.
The singer told her Instagram followers that she and the Tesla CEO had changed the baby's name to X Æ A-Xii from X Æ A-12.
Business Insider's Avery Hartmans had reported shortly after the child's birth in early May that per California's birth registration handbook, baby names in the state can include only the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language, with the exception of some punctuation in names like "O'Hare" and "Smith-Jones." Names cannot include numeric characters or diacritical marks like "ñ" or "ç," which are used to signify pronunciation in other languages.
After a commenter on Instagram said the couple "just removed the numbers to confirm to California law," the "Miss Anthropocene" singer seemed to agree.
"Roman numerals. Looks better tbh," Grimes wrote in another comment. The singer also told her followers that per the law, "one dash is allowed" (technically, the punctuation in the name is a hyphen). The character Æ, however, is not among the 26 letters of the English alphabet.
Regardless of the name's legality, there's still a huge debate as to how to pronounce it and whether the name is actually a string of seemingly random characters.
Grimes even said in a recent comment that the child "has many names," and she has been vague on the pronunciation.
