Greta Gerwig reacts to 'Barbie' Oscars snubs: 'Of course I wanted it for Margot'

"Barbie" director Greta Gerwig reacted to being snubbed for a best director nod at the 2024 Oscars.
The movie, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, was one of the most successful movies of 2023, raking in $1.446 billion at the box office. That was partly due to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon thanks to Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" opening in theaters on the same day.
"Barbie" bagged a number of nominations for the 2024 Oscars, including best picture, best supporting actor for Gosling, and best supporting actress for America Ferrera. But Gerwig didn't get a nod for best director, and Robbie wasn't nominated for best actress.
This led to plenty of backlash against the Academy for snubbing Gerwig and Robbie, especially since Gosling was nominated.
Gerwig reacted to the snub in an interview with Time for its 2024 Women of the Year edition.
"Of course I wanted it for Margot. But I'm just happy we all get to be there together," she said.
Gerwig is happy 'Barbie' was nominated for best film
The "Lady Bird" and "Little Women" director also pointed out that she still has an Oscar nomination because "Barbie" is up for best film.
Gerwig said: "A friend's mom said to me, 'I can't believe you didn't get nominated. I said, 'But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.' She was like, 'Oh, that's wonderful for you!' I was like, 'I know!'"
She was also asked about how she views her work in the context of the challenges of being an ambitious woman in the patriarchy, which were laid out by America Ferrera's "Barbie" monologue about women figuring out their place in the world, while trying to please everybody.
"I don't know if it's gendered. But I know I want to be able to make a body of work that feels like it's undeniable in terms of the work itself. I don't want there to be an asterisk next to my name," she said.
Gerwig added: "Do I have more of that than male filmmakers? I don't know! I know plenty of deeply insecure male filmmakers who are plagued in their own ways."
