Hollywood is out on a vengeance. As with other film industries, the mega station for English movies has struggled to churn out big screen blockbusters regularly after the pandemic. However, things are looking up with a slew of mega movies set to hit the big screen in July. The success or failure of these movies will have a big impact on where the moolah in the cinetown flows.

Amidst the hype around the soon to be released Mission Impossible 7, Oppenheimer and Barbie, the makers of Dune 2 have dropped a three minute extended trailer for their film which is slated to hit the theatres in November.

The first Dune movie won six Oscars including that for best original score YEAR, cinematography and visual effects. The Denis Villeneuve helmed story is adapted from the works of Frank Herbert and the upcoming movie is the second part of the first novel.

First, what you should know from the first instalment

Denis Villeneuve, self-admitted fan of the novels, decided to split the first novel by Herbert in two parts. The first part took time to build the intergalactic game of thrones world.

The movie shows the power struggle between two powerful families – House Atreides and House House Harkonnen – and the politics of controlling the planet of Arrakis, a desert planet rich in ‘spices’ which act has hallucinogens and are also a key ingredient used for intergalactic travel. This makes the war for ‘spices’ the central focus of the story.

What the trailer shows – No spoilers from the book

The second trailer of Dune 2 which has been dropped just over 18 hours ago, at the time of publishing has garnered 77,000 views. The trailer is a three minute extended peek at the upcoming movie.

The movie will see stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård reprise their roles from the first instalment. Moreover, stars like Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux will join the mega star cast.

The trailer shows that Paul Atreides, the central character in the film, played by Timothée Chalamet continues his mythic journey as he unites with Chani – played by Zendaya – and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.

The young protagonist has to learn the ways of the desert planet and also endeavour to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Lots riding on the upcoming films

Big directors like Cristopher Nolan and Steven Speilberg have spoken about the struggle to make big budget movies profitable with the latter even praising Tom Cruise's Top Gun 2 last year as a movie that might have saved the theatres.

Hollywood is still struggling to get out of the shadow of the pandemic and the big screens have faced a threat from OTT players upstaging them. After struggling to find a steady stream of blockbusters, 2023 has big gun directors like Greta Gerwig (Barbie), Cristopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Ridley Scott (Napoleon), Denis Villeneuve (Dune 2) and Martin Scorcesee (Killers of the Flower Moon) coming up with big releases.
