Disney Plus has been live for one week, but its flagship launch series, "The Mandalorian," is already one of the most popular original streaming shows of the year.

The live-action "Star Wars" series surged in demand in the US the week of Disney Plus' launch, according to data from Parrot Analytics, which measures "demand expressions," the company's standardized TV demand measurement unit that reflect the desire, engagement, and viewership of a series weighted by importance.

"The Mandalorian," which premiered November 12, was the third most in-demand original streaming series in the US last week, from November 10 to November 16. It was only behind DC Universe's "Titans" and Netflix's "Stranger Things." The chart below from Parrot Analytics shows the top 10 most in-demand original streaming shows in the US for the week:

"The Mandalorian" was also more popular with US audiences than Parrot Analytics' biggest new streaming shows of the year at the same point in their releases.

Four days after its premiere, "The Mandalorian" was:

  • 58.7% ahead of Amazon Prime Video's "Good Omens"
  • 35.8% ahead of Netflix's "The Umbrella Academy"
  • 15% ahead of Netflix's "When They See Us"
  • 11.5% ahead of Netflix's "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance"

"Given Disney Plus' episodic release strategy, we expect demand for 'The Mandalorian' to continue to grow further as new episodes become available to stream over the next several weeks," a Parrot Analytics representative told Business Insider.

The series was also number one on television tracking app TV Time's list of "shows on the rise" for the past week. "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series," another Disney Plus original series, came in second.

"The Mandalorian" has been a hit with critics as well as audiences. It has an 88% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes after two episodes.

"It's becoming clear that this is a very different story being told to us than the 'Star Wars' you've been watching since 'The Force Awakens' on the big screen," Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio wrote.
